Your Opportunity:

Unit clerks play a vital role in managing information flow in the Health Clinic and are often the first point of contact for patients and their families. Unit clerks are responsible for greeting and directing visitors, patients and staff. They answer incoming calls and respond to inquiries, or redirect calls and relay messages. Unit clerks assist physicians and other health-care providers. They transcribe and process physician orders including medication, laboratory, and diagnostic imaging and treatment orders. As part of their role, they schedule patients for tests and treatment, as well as maintain patient records and charts. Unit clerks are responsible for contacting patients to advice of admission, discharge and appointment dates. If needed, they can assist patients by arranging for transportation. In addition, unit clerks are responsible for other clerical duties. These include processing health care billings, preparing staff time sheets, recording unit meeting minutes, updating room lists and requisitioning office and patient care supplies. Unit clerks will spend the majority of the day fulfilling routine and repetitive tasks. Unit Clerk V are required to perform physical duties including: gathering clinical supplies, accessing upper and lower cabinetry, moving heavy clinical supplies within and between clinic rooms, bending, crouching and navigating awkward and repetitive positions to support medical procedures and moving heavy and awkward wheeled objects at times. The Unit Clerk V is required to pack, lift, move, and transport heavy and/or awkward supplies within the clinic. Service delivery may sitting, standing, and/or bending for long periods of time. They should be comfortable working with computers. They should enjoy customer service, as they will interact frequently with clients and staff. Unit clerks should also be able to prioritize and multi-task.

Description:

As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Grade 12 or General Equivalency Diploma, supplemented by office assistant courses and/or health record related courses required. English language skills in reading, writing and oral communication required. Good organizational, multi-tasking and time management skills. Ability to support physical duties that include a significant amount of sitting, standing, or bending for long periods, walking, static positioning, accessing upper and lower cabinetry, lifting and moving heavy or awkward medical equipment and supplies (up to 30 pounds). Excellent oral and written communication skills in English including fluency in medical terminology. The ability to work efficiently despite frequent interruptions. The ability to pay close attention to detail and maintain a high level of accuracy. Ability to adhere to strict organizational policies and procedures and legislated requirements regarding patient confidentiality. Ability to foster positive interpersonal and communication skills in a professional manner with clients, healthcare providers, peers, departmental management, and other individuals who access our service. Good interpersonal skills especially the ability to effectively manage difficult behaviors sometimes exhibited by people in distress. The ability to work with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment. They should enjoy working with people, operating computer and related equipment, and compiling information.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum 3 years within the last 5 years of Medical Clinic experience. Experience with Electronic Medical Records, Alberta Netcare, E-Z Schedule. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Remote Retention Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $3,000. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.
