The opportunity:

Wellington-Altus is currently recruiting for a Trader, Centralized Trade Group. Reporting to the Vice President, Portfolio Management Solutions, the Trader, Centralized Trade Group is primarily responsible for supporting retail trading across Wellington-Altus’s managed programs and platforms and executing institutional flow trades for various products managed by Wellington-Altus Asset Management (WAAM). The incumbent will play an integral role in providing direct support to Wellington-Altus’s retail Portfolio Managers and their teams in the management and execution of model based bulk trading strategies, using portfolio modeling and trading systems including Advent Genesis and Envestnet. The role will encompass the day-to-day monitoring and trading of select Wellington-Altus Private Wealth client accounts, including managing portfolio asset allocation mandates and model security weightings, analyzing trade data, performing investment and trade analysis, and enhancing the client experience for both internal and external stakeholders.

The Trader, Centralized Trade Group is responsible for carrying out all trading activities in an efficient, effective and accurate manner and will involve close communication with internal Portfolio Managers and Investment Advisors, Products & Platforms (P&P), Operations, Strategic Counterparties, external Service Providers, and internal Compliance. The incumbent will also participate in the build out and enhancement of the Wellington-Altus trading platform, along with training and mentoring new and existing junior members of the Centralized Trade Group (CTG), and defining trade system best practices and conducting user training.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaboratively work with key stakeholders across the business to understand and document the key processes and workflows for trade order management/execution within the managed accounts business lines.
  • Participating on project management office initiatives to implement changes and improvements to the managed account modelling/trade execution ecosystem.
  • Daily trade management of internal Managed Account solutions to ensure that rebalances and cash flows are executed correctly and fully invested.
  • Development and execution of the portfolio management activities that include onboarding, rebalancing requests, cash management and handling special situations.
  • Daily trading of bonds, preferred shares, ETFs, funds, REITs, and common shares.
  • Managing bulk equity allocations in adherence with the firm’s Fair Allocation of Trades policy.
  • Monitoring ongoing performance and market conditions as related to trade execution.
  • Performing pre-trade due diligence, developing trading strategies, and analyzing post trade results.
  • Automation, optimization and re-engineering of trade desk processes and tools to increase efficiency and improve the Wellington-Altus trading ecosystem.
  • Performing trade analytics and providing subsequent recommendations to improve trading processes and strategy through trading, investment, and risk management policy creation.
  • Facilitating day-to-day activities of the trading desk.
  • Supporting the trade reconciliation process and working in conjunction with trade support and systems analyst to ensure an effective recon process for all trade breaks and failures.
  • Serving as a SME on the effective use and application of the portfolio modelling and trading systems utilized across the enterprise, including Advent Genesis/Moxy and Evnestnet.
  • Conducting systems use training and trade modelling/execution demonstrations for selected audiences.
  • Regularly monitoring of Managed Account portfolio movements, and implementing changes as deemed appropriate by the associated advisor managed investment strategies.
  • Engaging with advisors and advisory team members via phone, email, live chat, and straight through systems channels with respect to client trading activities and trading needs.
  • Interacting with the Operations team and mid-office support team on trade reconciliations as necessary.
  • Creating and executing equity, mutual fund, and fixed income orders in a timely manner in accordance with portfolios mandates, models, trading policies and regulatory requirements
  • Providing guidance on trading processes and supporting execution of portfolio trades
  • Researching and maintaining a working knowledge of widely held ETFs, mutual funds, and third-party investment managers
  • Communicating investment strategy and performance results to advisors and clients as required
  • Providing technical support on investment and trading concepts to advisors and or client facing groups
  • Collaborating with financial advisors and internal stakeholders to optimize the delivery of the CTG services
  • Working alongside other members of the Products and Platforms team to help respond to advisor and client queries and participate in new product launches
  • Assisting in the training, development, and mentoring of colleagues within the CTG and P&P teams
  • Performing other duties, as required.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A bachelor’s degree in commerce, finance, business administration, or a related field of study.
  • A minimum of 5 years equity trading experience and capital markets experience.
  • CFA or CIM candidate is preferred.
  • Previous IIROC or CSA registration an asset.
  • Policy and practice management experience in a private client/retail advice setting.
  • Experience with bulk portfolio modelling and trading systems including Advent Genesis/Moxy and Envestnet, as well as Order Management Systems (OMS) including Fidessa and IRESS.
  • Experience with Risk Engines (ex. Barra, FactSet, Bloomberg-MARS, or similar)
  • Programming/scripting experience is an asset.
