OCAD University (OCAD U), Canada’s university of the imagination, provides a vibrant and stimulating environment for its faculty and students. VISA-3019-301 :Art & Fashion

(September 6, 2023-December 6, 2023;Tuesday,6:30PM-9:30PM;In-Person)


COURSE DESCRIPTION:While haute couture has become a central fixture in postmodern culture, fashion has held a special interest for artists since at least the nineteenth century. Whether clothing served as a medium for creativity to be applied to the warp and woof of everyday life, a means to re-engineer the fabric of social relations, or a target for critiques of tradition, functionality and commercialism, fashion attracted the attention of artists from diverse aesthetic and political positions. This class will explore sartorial explorations over the past 150 years - from Aesthetic Dress in the nineteenth century to Futurist and Constructivist utopian experiments in the twentieth to cybernetic skin-suits in the twenty-first - and the many ways in which artists have broken out of the domain of high art to address issues of gender, ethics, identity, subcultural affiliation and alterity through the material realm of clothes.


RESPONSIBILITIES:Meet regularly with the faculty and students on grading, course content and other matters as needed; assist in the evaluation of student work, using criteria established by the supervising faculty; work with faculty and other academic staff in support of the University’s educational goals and objectives; participate in the provision of a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community and its facilities.


QUALIFICATIONS:The ideal candidate should have a graduate degree, undergraduate degree or be currently enrolled in a relevant graduate program; a demonstrated understanding of pedagogy, e.g. course preparation, teaching methods, evaluations standards, etc., English as a Second Language training is considered an asset; strong organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills; sound knowledge of, and commitment to, healthy and safe work practices; previous teaching assistance experience at the post-secondary level.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:Teaching Assistants are hired annually on a per-course basis with fixed-term annual contracts renewable to a maximum of 3 years.


Please note:

  • As mandated by the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies (OCGS), full-time graduate students may not accept Teaching Assistant or other university related employment in excess of 10 hours per week (or 130 hours per semester).
  • One cannot hold both a Teaching Assistant and Faculty Appointment within the same semester.
  • All positions are subject to budgetary approval and satisfactory enrolment levels.
  • If you are a work or study permit holder, please note a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) and Canadian bank account is a condition of employment.


HOURS OF WORK:

Hours per week are based on enrollment.


COMPENSATION:

$29.23 per hour 6% in lieu of benefits plus vacation pay, as applicable, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act.
