What you can expect in a typical day

Irving Oil Engineering Services is recruiting for an Intermediate to Senior Mechanical Engineer to provide tank integrity engineering, planning and coordination services in support of Irving Oil’s Tank Life Extension (TLE) Program.

This position functionally reports to the Mechanical Engineering Lead at Engineering Services, while interfacing daily with the TLE program team at the Saint John Refinery. The work is split between office and field assignments as described in responsibilities below.

Your Roles And Responsibilities
  • Support ongoing implementation of a Tank Prioritization Tool based on the principles of API RP 580, risk-based inspection, with PoF (Potential of Failure) and CoF (Cost of Failure) factors derived from API STD 653 “Tank Inspection, Repair, Alteration and Reconstruction”
  • Provide Engineering input to the integrity risk assessment by tank, and provide recommendation of tank inspection priorities
  • Ensure contractor compliance with the Irving Oil tank related specifications
  • Develop and maintain Irving Oil standard tank details and drawings
  • Provide input in the development of Program Process documents and procedures related Engineering.
  • Review of EWO and work packages provided by Contractors for the execution of repairs and maintenance.
  • Consolidate historical inspection and repair data, and update for future work.
  • Maintain API compliance KPIs for monthly reporting
  • Work with Asset Integrity Management team to maintain history data for all tanks
  • Manage OTR (On-The-Run) inspection support for budgeting and predictive scope
  • Provide repair recommendations for SOW (Scopes of Work) and budgets during the planning process
  • Assist in managing the Tank Inspection Contractor during execution which includes scheduling and on-site visits while the Tank Repair Contractor is on site performing repair, alteration and reconstruction
  • Provide answers to API 650/653 questions for the TLE Program
  • Update planners on inspection progress daily during inspection window
  • Support Field Engineering and Construction with respect to FCNs (Field Change Notices)
  • Participate fully in Look-ahead and Core Team meetings

  • Excellent communication skills, coordination skills, and have the ability to lead other engineering employees and project members
  • Passion for building and improving asset integrity and inspection processes
  • Demonstrated non-authoritative leadership skills to influence facility operations
  • Strong organizational skills – will be managing multiple priorities across the company’s Tank Life Extension program
  • Must be familiar with local regulatory requirements and Codes, and Industry standards as listed below
  • Ability to work across departments to design and develop end solutions
  • Presentation, and leadership skills
  • Ability to make binding decisions on technical matters of consequence.
  • Ability to work in the field, including working in year-round weather conditions, able to bend, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, etc. and able to lift up to 20lbs. You must be comfortable with high elevation climbing, working at heights, and in enclosed spaces. You must be able to wear full PPE as required by safety standards.
Travel
  • Travel is not a requirement for this role.
Education And Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (B.Sc. or B.Eng.) with P.Eng. eligibility in the Province of New Brunswick
  • Minimum 5 years of tank integrity engineering experience in a refinery / petrochemical / oil and gas industry setting
  • A working knowledge of procedures and best industry practices for tank repairs such as tank cleaning, inspection, welding, material selection and application, or be capable of quickly learning procedures as identified in API standards and practices relating to aboveground storage tanks and pressure vessels (bullets and spheres)
  • API Certification for API 510, 653 would be an asset
  • API Certification for API 571, 577, or 580, or RBI (Risk-Based Inspection) background with metallurgy and corrosion training would also be a great benefit
