Purpose:

The University released its institutional Sustainability Strategy in November 2017. The goals of the strategy are divided into three categories: People, Knowledge and Place. The core goals remain constant and aligned with the University’s Academic Plan and the University wide challenge to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the overarching mission and vision of the University. York is committed to a continuous effort to instill sustainability into the many aspects of university life on our campuses, in our operations and in the larger community of which we are part. Many faculties within the university include sustainability within their curriculum, resulting in over 500 course offerings on sustainability. York University has committed to being carbon neutral on or before 2049 and sustainability is rapidly making its way into every aspect of university-operations, there are many sustainability initiatives, implemented across York’s campuses including an Energy Management Program, Zero Waste, food, green building, grounds, and transportation. Under the direction of the Program Director, Sustainability in the Office of Sustainability, and the Communications Manager DFA, the Sustainability Communications and Engagement Coordinator will contribute to advancing York’s institutional sustainability efforts. The Sustainability Communications & Engagement Coordinator will work closely with institutional stakeholders to support of the Office of Sustainability’s priorities and goals reflective of the Sustainability Strategy and the University’s strategic direction and culture.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline such as Sustainability, Environmental Science/Studies, Communication or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

Minimum 2 years’ experience in progressively responsible and related positions with demonstrated experience in internal communications, strategic communications planning and execution, including social and digital media programs. Minimum one year of related work experience supporting sustainability initiatives and programs. Experience in managing large-scale, organizational change management communications. ability to work collaboratively with partner groups to influence and provide communications advice, counsel, and support. Project coordination and event planning experience are assets. Experience communicating about, and foundational knowledge in, equity, diversity and inclusion.

Skills:
Knowledge:
Knowledge of sustainability issues and best practices.
Knowledge of University programs, policies & structures an asset.
Knowledge of the political environment, external grant agencies, provincial sustainability resources / programs.

Skills:
Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of diverse audiences, including writing for online channels, web and the development of web-based communications. Experience with creating and identifying quality social media content related to academic or non-profit organizations is preferred.
Excellent copywriting, long- and short form content development, structural editing and fact-finding.
Excellent analytical skills and initiative.
Able to work independently and to collaborate and participate effectively within a team environment.
Strong presentation skills and ability to process, synthesize and present information/ recommendations/plans to a varied audience.
Superior interpersonal, decision-making and organizational skills, able to effectively work with and influence senior administrative leaders.
Strong experience working with MS Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), WordPress, design and publishing software, (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator).

Additional Notes:

Work is performed in an office setting with extended periods working on a computer and telephone.
Work involves unpredictable deadline pressures and conflicting priorities.
May work extended hours as a result of required deadlines and unpredictability of role (which can include evenings and weekends).

  • Compensation:
York implemented a revised CPM Compensation Framework in 2019. The Framework is a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award. Employees will receive the grid adjustment and depending on performance, eligible permanent employees may move to the next step of the grid and may receive a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.Visit the CPM Compensation page on the HR Website to find out more about York’s CPM Compensation Program.
