ABOUT THE ROLE


We are looking to hire a Wind Electrical Engineer. Based either at TransAlta’s Pincher Creek Office in Alberta, Shelburne or Kingston Offices in Ontario, or our Matane Office in Quebec. This role will be reporting to the Supervisor Engineering, Wind & Solar Operations. You will work closely with the Wind and Solar Engineers to plan and implement engineering scope for power generation electrical projects.

This is a full-time salaried, safety-sensitive position. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.

This role will also offer a blend of office time as well as time in the field. Some travel will be required across our facilities in Canada and the US (expected to be around 5% of the time).


WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Provide the day-to-day engineering support to operations, maintenance and forced outages to ensure the facility can operate safely and in compliance within technical policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Hire, develop and lead engineering staff to meet agreed upon deliverables.
  • Manage the engineering resources to support operations, maintenance, projects, turnarounds and forced outages to ensure the facility can operate safely and in compliance within company technical policies, procedures, standards to meet the assets operating goals.
  • Manage and communicate equipment risk and mitigations process.
  • Ensure that the detailed technical risk mitigations are entered into the capital MRF process for both planned outages and non-turnaround work. This includes conceptual engineering work scopes and risk assessments that is well balanced to meet overall asset goals.
  • Complete the timely analysis of equipment failures through Root Cause Failure Analysis and recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Develop and prioritize the condition assessment process based on business needs.
  • Ensure that engineering work completed internally and externally, complies with the engineering Professional Practice Management Plan.
  • Complete evidence documents and work to maintain compliance with NERC Reliability Standards and ISO rules with support from the Operations Compliance team.
  • Ensure compliance with local Electrical Codes including managing the fleet’s arc flash program.
  • Establish a collaborative work environment with team, peers, stakeholders, and support groups to ensure issues may be resolved in a professional and productive manner.
  • Manage resources and operational priorities for completing technical due diligence for M&A and Business Development projects in line with standards set forth.
  • Develop and manage the engineering budget for functional area, including any necessary consultant work.
  • Complete the timely escalation of technical issues and risks as required.
  • Identify strategies and implement them for the fuel group to improve processes and equipment performance/reliability.
  • Bring industry best practices, innovations/new technology to be evaluated by the business.
  • Provide input and implement best practices standardization adopted by Renewables Engineering in the fuel area Provide electrical engineering operational support of wind generating plant equipment such as substation, turbines, underground and overhead collector systems, control systems, switchgear, protective relays, and transformers.
  • Lead the implementation of new capital projects and turnarounds that meet the asset goals.
  • Complete condition assessment and risk assessment work as required by business needs.
  • Establish a collaborative work environment with team, peers, stakeholders, and support groups to ensure issues may be resolved in a professional and productive manner.
  • Complete technical due diligence for M&A and Business Development projects in line with standards set forth.
  • Identify and implement innovative solutions to improve current processes and improve equipment performance/reliability.
  • Provide emergency support for forced outages and other operational issues they may arise.


WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:

  • Must be registered (or able to register) as a Professional Engineer in the province of Alberta, Ontario or Quebec, and in good standing.
  • Must have a degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Must be able to travel within Canada and the US.
  • Must be a self-starter, demonstrate initiative, and be capable of working both independently and with others in a team environment.
  • Must have Wind, Solar, BESS plant and/or high voltage substation operating experience.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS


  • Successful completion of pre-employment testing is a condition of employment
  • As this is a site-based position, the successful applicant will need to report to a Company site location.
