Job Description

The Structural Designer is responsible for generating design guidance documents and reviewing specifications, standards for marine Structural and will support the development of a strategy for Structural systems. The Structural Designer will also be responsible for interaction with all stakeholders associated with their respective Structural systems/equipment including engineers, the client, the production team, production planning, the Test and Trials Team, QC and procurement to ensure Engineering Standard requirements are met.

This role interacts very widely at multiple levels and both Internal and External. It will be common for the Designer to be interacting with the Client, Design Partners and Suppliers – so communication skills (written and verbal) need to be exceptional. The Designer reports to the Deputy Director, Detail Design and has no direct reports.


Duties/Accountabilities

The discipline Designer is responsible for discharging all Standards Development tasks in a timely manner. These tasks may include:

  • Modeling of details to support development of standards details.
  • Preparing Detail Design Standards to ensure the resulting standard details align with design for manufacturing rules and support project specific standards and processes.
  • Provide technical support and resolution for Structural issues from design to fabrication.
  • Coordinate with Standard Part Catalogue Manager as required to ensure parts standardization criteria is maintained and response to queries received.
  • Assist in developing the vessel’s material part rationalization criteria to identify types of material allowed by each program.


Education and Experience

  • Associate Design degree or equivalent experience required.
  • 5 years in depth experience working in Design and Manufacturing, or Heavy Industry (Shipbuilding preferred).
  • Knowledge of AutoCad software and document control systems.
  • Preference for knowledge with Cadmatic, ShipConstructor, NavisWorks and PLM (ARAS preferred).
  • Previous structural standard development experience an asset
  • Familiarity with National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) program an asset.
