Job Summary

The Ministry of Forests is committed to implementing a new vision for forest management in partnership with Indigenous Peoples that prioritizes ecosystem health and community resiliency while advancing the Ministry’s culture towards true and lasting reconciliation.

As a member of the Prince George Natural Resource District Indigenous Relations Team, the STO24 Advisor, First Nations Relations contributes to that commitment by leading Indigenous consultation on statutory natural resource authorizations and decisions that support healthy forest ecosystems and a vibrant forest economy within the Omineca Region. Elements of the work include reviewing technical and professional proposals and applications; conducting, advising and supporting Indigenous engagement and consultation – ensuring legal obligations have been met; and advancing the Province’s reconciliation commitments, including the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Advisor also provides consultation-related recommendations to Provincial decision-makers.

The position works closely with all Ministry of Forests business lines, including forest tenures and authorizations, water, lands, wildlife, etc. and in a cross-agency capacity to support reconciliation initiatives with Indigenous communities, including the negotiation and implementation of agreements (e.g. Forest Tenure Opportunity Agreements, Forest Consultation and Revenue Sharing Agreements).

Job Requirements

  • Degree related to the work of the program area, OR
  • Diploma related to the work of the program area and
  • One (1) year of *related work experience*.

An equivalent combination of education and *related work experience* may be considered.

*Related work experience* must include each of the following, within the past 10 years:

  • Experience working with First Nations, in a Government-to-Government or community context.
    • Experience conducting research and analysis related to land use, resource management, social or economic development issues.

Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:

  • At least one (1) year of experience leading/coordinating consultation/engagement or negotiation with First Nations.
  • Proficiency with geospatial applications (ie. iMap, ArcGIS, ArcPro etc.).
  • Ability to lead, mediate and facilitate diverse working groups.

PROVISOS

  • Must hold and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence or equivalent (e.g., equivalent may be same class in another province).
  • Must be willing and able to travel, including to remote areas.
