Position Summary

The Shipping Supervisor reports directly to the Logistics Manager and is responsible for minimizing Vicwest’s traffic costs consistent with the timely and safe arrival or all inbound and outbound goods in our Edmonton and Saskatoon plants. The Shipping Supervisor must select from a wide range of transportation media and carriers, and work towards creating efficiencies to reduce Vicwest’s custom duties.

Key Accountabilities

1. Responsible for logistics management and continuous improvement of current route systems and schedules.
2. Develop and oversee proficient workforce in traffic and distribution activities.
3. Monitor performance against established budget, quality standards and scheduling.

Major Responsibilities

  • Responsible for scheduling and control of applicable deliveries and route trucks (route planning).
  • Assesses and determines equipment requirements and obtains necessary quotes from carriers and/or Brokers, as required, to support the Western logistics plan.
  • Develops and oversees a proficient workforce engaged in such activities as traffic and distribution as related to production schedules.
  • Ensures high level subordinate performance by participating in the selection, training, development, and motivation of all direct reports.
  • Directs the procurement of trucks and trailers by reviewing key requirements and specifications.
  • Minimizes Vicwest’s customs bill by ensuring that the company’s goods are correctly categorized and that the most favorable duties are levied on them.
  • Ensures that selected carriers perform up to standard, and ensures all loss, damage, and over-charge claims are handled swiftly and effectively.
  • Coordinates the most cost effective distribution methods and procedures to be utilized.
  • Prepares reports and statistics for review and recommends operational changes to senior management when necessary to ensure standards and efficiencies are maintained and improved.
  • Keeps senior management, traffic, procurement, and supply chain management teams informed of all significant development and pending rate changes.
  • Initiates and performs studies that will result in the reduction of Vicwest’s traffic bill.

Qualifications

  • College or university degree considered an asset.
  • Lean or Six Sigma experience an asset .
  • 3+ years of logistics/traffic/distribution experience considered an asset.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or distribution business, building materials considered an asset.
  • SAP experience is an asset or experience working with a business Intelligence tool.
  • Knowledge of production control and scheduling models considered an asset.

Salary: $45,000.00-$55,000.00 per year
