North Shore Neighbourhood House C.U.P.E. JOB VACANCY – SENIORS SOCIAL PROGRAMMER

  • Hours of Work: Part – time, 21 hours per week. Please note: Some flexibility required for shifts to accommodate programming and special events.

Nature and Scope of Work:
This is social programming work for elder clients primarily involving the planning and execution of recreational bus trip excursions. The incumbent plans, organizes, schedules, and promotes bus trip events, and occasionally attends on the bus with elder clients to provide leadership and guidance. The incumbent may be asked to assist in the planning and implementation of other programs. Independence of judgment and action is exercised within the scope of the programming focus (bus trips). Unusual or contentious problems are referred to a superior who reviews work performed.
Illustrative Examples of Work:
  • Plans, organizes, schedules and promotes bus excursion events for elderly clients.
  • Leads activity sessions and senior bus trips and recommends changes where necessary to improve the program and be more responsive to client needs.
  • Oversees the program, and/or other assigned programs.
  • Works with, and oversees the work of volunteers within the assigned portfolio.
  • Promotes interest and participation in program activities and establishes and maintains contact with seniors, staff and volunteers.
  • Assists in the production of newsletters and brochures.
  • Answers enquiries from the general public, and refers problems to a superior.
  • Cooperates with other staff members in planning and implementing other various programs, and attends meetings as required.
  • Prepares and maintains records, activity reports, maintains equipment and checks inventory.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures and ensures that required standards of behaviour and safety are maintained in the facility and at offsite locations.
  • Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:
  • Sound knowledge of the social, cultural and wellness interests of persons served and resources in the community.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, practices, principles and policies applicable to the work.
  • Working knowledge of sports, social activities, arts and crafts, and other pursuits related to various programs for seniors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports.
  • Ability to guide the work of volunteers.
Desirable Training and Experience:
Completion of Grade 12 with courses in social work, gerontology, recreation, recreation therapy, volunteer development, or related field or a suitable combination of training and experience.
Required Licenses, Certificates and Registrations:
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate
  • Food Safe
