This position reports to a Senior Director, Legal Affairs.
We are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel who wants to be involved in a variety of initiatives and who is looking for the opportunity to learn and excel in matters requiring knowledge in several areas of law, including commercial agreements, acquisitions and financings, litigation and employment law, governance and treasury, privacy and intellectual property and marketing. Your Main Challenges
  • Act as an expert lawyer supporting all Legal Affairs teams in the deployment of initiatives, providing legal advice on a multitude of diverse matters
  • Provide legal advice and intervene in complex and strategic files that have a significant impact on the activities, operations and results of the National Bank of Canada and its subsidiaries
  • Provide opinions on the risks associated with the various areas of the law and make recommendations to ensure the development and protection of National Bank of Canada and its subsidiaries
  • Understand the impact of regulatory requirements on National Bank of Canada’s activities
  • Improve internal processes and increase corporate knowledge
  • Act as a strategic advisor in various files, projects or contentious situations
  • Analyze, interpret and review various legal reports and documents to protect the rights of National Bank of Canada
  • Participate in committees or special projects that require a high level of expertise and represent National Bank of Canada before various external organizations or authorities
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in law and 6 years of experience or Master’s degree in law and 4 years of experience
  • Member of the Quebec Bar or other Canadian province
  • Experience in one of the following areas of law: commercial agreements, acquisitions and financing, litigation and employment law, governance and treasury, privacy or intellectual property and marketing
  • Desire and ability to learn and contribute in multiple areas of law
  • Experience in the banking industry desirable
  • Good judgment and business acumen
  • Propensity to provide efficient and quality service to business partners
  • Proactive attitude, leadership and initiative
  • Ability to manage priorities and a large volume of files
  • Bilingualism (spoken/written) in French and English is essential
