The Modelling Specialist is responsible for supporting HIDI’s design and analytical activities through specialized knowledge in hourly energy modeling, sustainable design, and economic analysis. Act as the team’s technical expert for modelling of buildings using IES-VE software.


Responsibilities
Business Development

  • Work to develop strong, ongoing relationships with clients

General Management

  • Keep Group Leader apprised of activities
  • Lead by example, following proper procedures
  • Participate in training courses and show initiative for professional development
  • Provide insightful and enthusiastic assistance to other staff
  • Schedule workload appropriately, maximizing productive time
  • Work enthusiastically with the Group to accomplish common objectives

Production

  • Act as a technical resource for Energy Analysts and Energy Specialists as they complete production tasks. Complete technically challenging or innovative production tasks.
  • Utilize expertise in the technical analysis of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for proposed and existing buildings to review client-focused engineering reports.
  • Attend client meeting to discuss results in a clear, concise manner. Accept feedback from clients to refine internal technical documents and revised client deliverables.
  • Be an active member of the integrated design team. Attend coordination meetings. Coordinate work with other disciplines including Architectural and Structural.
  • Typical production tasks will include supporting Energy Specialist and Energy Analyst staff in the following:
    • Load Calculations – take-offs and internal load calculations.
    • Energy modelling
      • Provide energy modeling and analysis support for design load calculations for new and existing buildings.
      • Utilize performance simulation tools to analyze energy efficiency measures for both new and existing buildings.
    • Provide technical analysis and support during the design and construction phases.
    • Provide a range of energy efficiency and energy resource planning activities.
    • Source and update energy efficiency incentive programs on an ongoing basis
    • Using government utility billing schemes, interpret utility bills and provide metering/billing strategies.
    • Assemble modelling-related submissions for incentive and certification programs such as TGS, LEED, Zero Carbon Building, etc.
    • Review systems to ensure they are in accordance with OBC, MNECB, ASHRAE and/or other relevant Codes and Standards.
  • Other tasks may be assigned that require skillsets similar to the tasks above.
  • Answer and direct calls and respond to telephone queries. Prepare both internal and external correspondence.
  • Be an active member of the integrated design team.
  • Attend coordination meetings.
  • Coordinate work with other disciplines including Architectural and Structural.

Tools/ Templates/ Training

  • Responsible for overall quality of tools, templates, and process documents used by the team.
  • Works with other staff to incorporate new knowledge into documents.
  • Acts as technical reviewer for these documents.
  • May attend technical seminars or other external events to capture new knowledge for the team.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong interest in sustainable development
  • At least 7 years of experience with building energy modelling
  • At least 3 years of experience with IES-VE software
  • Detail oriented with excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Experience with reading and coordinating Mechanical, Electrical, Structural and Architectural drawings
  • Experience with Windows and general computer skills
  • Familiar with OBC, MNECB, ASHRAE and other relevant Codes and Standards
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Superior problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Fundamental understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, and HVAC equipment
  • Working knowledge of energy efficiency incentive programs
  • Working knowledge of new “green” building technologies and processes
  • Familiar with LEED certification process
