We are looking for a Senior Advisor, Communicationsto join the communications and government relations team at Diavik Diamond Mine, to support the operation’s business strategy, now and into the future.

This is great opportunity to be a key member of the three-person communications team in Yellowknife, while also being part of a much larger global communications team. Although this role is focused on the Diavik mine operation, Rio Tinto is a global operation, and the successful individual will need to balance local communication needs against the broader guidelines and company priorities. It is important to have a demonstrated capability to develop and nurture relationships both inside and outside the business.

Reporting to the Manager of Communications and Government Relation and working in a challenging and exciting environment, you will:

  • Develop and execute integrated communications and stakeholder engagement plans that support and align with Diavik’s objectives, including its internal communications, community relations, government relations and closure objectives.
  • Develop position papers, briefing documents, executive talking points, Questions and Answers, and issues briefs for review by the manager.
  • Develop and implement internal communications plans, including messages and materials to enhance employee engagement such as employee recognition programs, internal people surveys, employee notes and other on-site employee engagement activities.
  • Support Diavik senior leaders with internal and external communications including speeches, presentations, employee town hall meetings, global team meetings and crisis communications.
  • Provide government relations support within the Northwest Territories to enhance Diavik’s profile and reputation within the region.
  • Maintain key relationships with the appropriate level of local and territorial government.
  • Work closely with the environment and closure teams on regulatory issues.

What you’ll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree (in communications, business, economic, political science preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience (at least five years) in communications, government relations and reputation management, preferably in a public company
  • A high level of experience in developing and executing strategic, proactive, fit-for-purpose communications plans to support business objectives
  • Good organizational and issues management skills
  • A team-oriented, proactive, results-driven and collaborative approach, with experience working in a matrix organization, willing to lead by example, and support Rio Tinto’s culture and corporate priorities
  • Demonstrated flexibility, resilience and ability to stay calm and good-humoured under pressure; positive, respectful, and willing to learn
  • Has a good work ethic, works quickly and efficiently, and takes initiative
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, savvy and diplomatic corporate communicator who understands what communications support is needed by senior management
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite as well as Creative Cloud programs, particularly InDesign
  • Willing and able to travel regularly to the mine site
