As a Research Scientist - Advanced Concepts (AC), you work with a highly technical interdisciplinary group of forward-thinkers to generate knowledge, apply a research point-of-view, and deliver solutions for the mountain athlete everywhere. With support from your team, you drive and contribute to technical projects across all product categories. You apply your curiosity and experience in solving complex problems to the intersection of outdoor apparel and equipment and cutting-edge innovation.

This role is based out of our North Vancouver office and is open to hybrid remote work. Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada.

The Advanced Concepts team drives breakthrough innovation in snow, trail and climb for the mountain athlete everywhere. Our in-house, end-to-end capabilities in research, engineering, design, development, digital experience, and product validation allow us to innovate head-to-toe solutions that bring the coast mountain experience to the world. If you were a Research Scientist - Advanced Concepts, now, here are some of the core activities you would be doing:

  • Defining, developing, and delivering an applied research point-of-view, science-based methodology and technical solutions in support of the Advanced Concepts priority projects
  • Supporting projects across the Arc’teryx Creative and Product teams, providing a science-based perspective rooted in applied research outputs
  • Developing methodology that allows for objective investigation into fundamental research questions
  • Leading both laboratory and field experiments to investigate human response and performance related to novel product design
  • Collecting and analyzing data, using statistical methods to confirm and or refute the hypothesis and understand of associations between variables
  • Collaborating with academic researchers to leverage specialized expertise and equipment
  • Designing and fabricating novel test fixtures and equipment, to support in understanding product performance and durability
  • Partnering with materials scientists and engineers to interpret both material-level and human data
  • Ensuring you and your team maintain current industry technology, product innovation, research literature and equipment knowledge through education and hands-on experience
  • Utilizing a combination of physical and digital tools to approach problem solving, while understanding the strengths and limitations of each approach
  • Collaborating across many facets of the business to get to the root of the right problem
  • Collaborating with a diverse team of experts within the Advanced Concepts team, and fostering inspiration to deliver advanced Research and Development (R&D) solutions across all product areas
  • Partnering with AC Leadership to maintain a robust Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio, proprietary solutions and exclusivity on materials projects with in alignment with the Legal team
  • Partnering with the Innovation Operations team on research- and engineering- specific resourcing opportunities, including funding, academic and internship programs (SR&ED, IRAP, NRC, MITACS, and so forth)
  • Driving key initiatives to support the future of Arc’teryx with a focus on product circularity

Are you our next Research Scientist - Advanced Concepts?

  • You have a graduate degree in engineering or applied research specializing in biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology, mechanical engineering or thermoregulation
  • You have 5+ years of technical apparel and/or equipment experience in product innovation, applied research, engineering and/or performance validation
  • You have experience with experimental design, data collection and analysis, as well as dissemination of findings
  • You have used instrumentation to investigate questions related to dynamic, environmental, or physiological systems
  • You have a deep understanding of the science behind technical apparel and/or performance hardgoods design and/or production
  • You are energized by solving problems in the fields of applied human research, advanced manufacturing, and performance validation (lab & field).
  • You are passionate about delivering disruptive and bold solutions that keep Arc’teryx at the forefront of the outdoor design industry.
  • You have exceptional communication skills, including a proven ability to communicate findings to audiences with a wide range of backgrounds
  • You are motivated to foster the culture of innovation within your team and beyond
  • You are proactive in identifying the root cause of issues, seeking the best (sometimes not the easiest) solutions with an unwavering commitment to do what is right
