QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Current Certificate of Competence in the Province of Ontario.
  • Current BCLS certification (Level C).
  • Must have current or recent clinical experience within the last 2 years in orthopedic or general surgical nursing in an acute care setting.
  • Must have completed a physical assessment course within past 5 years.
  • Must have completed the Medication Administration Course for RPNs.
  • Must have completed a patient assessment program within the past five (5) years.
  • Demonstrated patient/family teaching skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather the results obtained from diagnostic/laboratory tests and integrate the findings with the physical assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish the priority of problems and needs according to actual and potential threats to the patient and reassess changes in status.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively in an inter-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community resources required for effective patient care and discharge planning.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness to participate in professional research related activities.
  • Demonstrated reliable attendance, punctuality and availability.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively address / resolve issues including conflict in a respectful and productive manner.
  • Demonstrated satisfactory performance of the following RPN skills:
- Aseptic Technique/Application of Sterile Dressing/Suture & Clip Removal;
- Initiating, Regulating, Monitoring and Discontinuing IV Therapy Skills;
- Central line/ PICC line care and maintenance;
- Urinary Catheterization;
- Manual Irrigation of a Urinary Catheter;
- Oxygen Delivery;
- Oropharyngeal/Nasopharyngeal Suctioning; - Neurological Assessment; and
- Cast Care & Reapplication of Skin Traction.
- Pain management - Wound care, experience with VAC dressings is an asset.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain (within 6 month of start date) Coronary Care Nursing 1 or equivalent.
