Reporting to the Student Life and Housing Manager, the Recreation Supervisor is responsible for promoting and actively engaging in student life and physical activity, recreational program planning and directing or supervising the recreation attendant staff.
Specific Duties
Supervisory Duties
  • Supervises and coordinates all aspects of daily operations for Recreations Services including staff scheduling, fee collection, staff recruitment, hiring and training, and equipment handling.
  • Provide exceptional customer service provided to facility users.
  • Checks staff timesheets for accuracy, submits to payroll.
  • Coordinates monthly reports.
  • Negotiates, and contracts external recreation staff (i.e Yoga leaders).
  • Leads the process of recruiting, interviewing, and hiring new staff members.
  • Monitors email, and voicemail requests with triage with appropriate responses as it fits in their role.
  • Coordinates and prepares personnel paperwork for recreational activities (i.e. contracts and time sheets for fitness leaders etc.).
  • Ensures WHMIS compliance in work area including keeping an inventory of controlled products, maintaining the MSDS binder, and ensuring containers of controlled products have correct WHMIS labelling.
  • Inform and hold facility users responsible to adhere to CNC policies, particularly with respect to safety.
  • Ensures that cleaning and maintenance of equipment is done on a regular basis to established standards.
  • Arranges for the opening and closing of the facilities and is responsible for the supervision of the gymnasium area, climbing wall, courts, weight room and surrounding area.
  • Provides monthly budgeting reports and costenefit analysis on budgeting.
  • Creates, promotes and facilitates student focused health and wellness initiatives in collaboration with other departments and campuses.

  • Oversees washroom advertising processes including communication to other departments, creation of advertising materials and regular turnover of posters, etc. Represents holistic wellness at CNC through the use of language, building rapport, personal development, growth mindset and participation in events.

Recreation Duties
  • Leads up to 5 hours a week of recreation drop-in fitness classes and sport specific drop-in for staff and students.
  • Collaborates with college departments and internal/external organizations (Student Union) on student-focused projects and initiatives (ex. Self Defence training).
  • Conducts student/staff weight room orientations to build rapport and ensure user safety.
  • Report incidents and ensure appropriate documentation is completed, and submitted to appropriate parties.
  • Uses judgement and creative problem solving to resolve issues or complaints as they arise or when referred to by staff or students, keeping Manager (s) and appropriate parties informed as required.
  • Gathers and communicates customer feedback and proposes enhancements to customer service print or web information.
  • Coordinates facility bookings and paperwork for internal and external users.
  • Manages and develops excellent relationships with students, staff, and external user groups (gym and facilities rentals).
  • Develops and maintains dynamic fitness programming and creatively uses available facilities to best serve CNC students and employees.
  • Responsible for designing, assessing and implementing feasible cost-recovery initiatives that support recreation for students and employees, extension to the community and assist in developing a healthy campus.
  • Prepare classroom visits and presentations to promote Recreation Services alongside Wellness Team.
  • Ensures that liability waivers are completed and on-file for all users.
  • Provides emergency first aid services as required.
  • Advise and assist users on the proper use of facilities, and recreation equipment.
  • You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners and communities.
  • You will promote a positive work atmosphere and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Recognized two (2 ) year diploma in Physical Education, Recreation, Athletics, Sports Administration, Kinesiology or a related field.
  • 2 years or more experience in a recreation setting.
  • Ability to establish, cultivate and maintain excellent relationships with internal and external users
  • Demonstrates exceptional communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and mentor student assistants.
  • Post-secondary experience preferred
  • Experience leading others
  • Extensive knowledge of sports equipment, including the ability to maintain gymnasium equipment and make minor repairs as required
  • Current Level 2 or higher, Occupational First Aid Certificate required or achieved within three (3) months of hiring
  • Self-directed, particularly regarding the effective use of less busy times
  • Sound knowledge of financial management including the ability to control costs
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with quickly changing work priorities
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Initiative and ability to work well on own.
  • Physical ability to complete the demands of position.
