Job Description

Internal Audit is an independent and objective assurance and consulting activity guided by a philosophy of adding value to improve the operations of Sun Life Financial Inc. It assists Sun Life in accomplishing its objectives by bringing a systematic and disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the organization’s governance, risk management and internal control processes.

The Internal Audit Professional Practice group is responsible for leading the selection and effective use of tools, methodology selection and implementation, and best practices including quality assurance, reporting, and training for the Audit Department worldwide.

This Role Has Two Components

Reporting to the Director, Internal Audit - Professional Practice, the Technology Lead will actively support the department’s initiatives on working differently and translating experiences with tangible digital solutions.
  • Lead the transition of our audit working papers to a GRC tool with a focus on reviewing current practices and implementing efficiencies in the internal audit group. This includes project management with a strong focus on client satisfaction and delivering a successful implementation of our new audit tool.
  • Contribute to driving change in the Audit department by supporting the Director in the implementation of key department strategic initiatives to enhance performance and align with best practices.
The role provides a unique opportunity to interact with senior level internal audit management and further enhance skills essential in internal audit.

What will you do?

Technology Implementation
  • Lead technology projects, including transition into a new GRC tool, as well as ongoing support to global teams on key and transformational changes
  • Adopt a digital mindset to analyze and challenge current processes and recommend optimal solutions to implement the complexities of the audit cycle
  • Develop project plans and monitor traction to ensure implementation is completed on time and within budget
  • Review business requirements, solicit feedback, and ensure the project meets the audit team’s needs
  • Liaise with multiple teams and manage communications and relationships to facilitate smooth delivery
  • Develop partnerships and co-ordinate with the Second Line of Defense to ensure consistent and coordinated solutions are implemented
  • Lead training sessions on the new tool to internal audit teams, including assisting in orienting new hires and providing refresher training to current employees and senior management, to help achieve individual and department-wide objectives
Strategic Initiatives and Thought Leadership
  • Participate in key projects sponsored by senior audit leadership focused on audit transformation, digital mindset, and continuous improvements
  • Use integrated tools and data to provide value add insights, including but not limited to, trends requiring management escalation, develop design to assist audit teams with predictive decision-making, etc.
  • Be curious and explore different audit approaches in the industry to be able to compare current audit practices with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Proactively identify opportunities for efficiency gains through audit tools / approaches and collaboration with global teams in North America, the UK and Asia
Knowledge Management and Internal Audit Practices
  • Support Director with Internal Audit programs focused on enhancing principles-based methodology, global training, periodic communications, and annual Audit Planning
  • Design and generate reporting as requested from senior management, and facilitate preparation of material for regulatory or external reviews of Internal Audit
  • Develop innovative techniques to identify and complete targeted reviews on areas of interest to senior management, regulators, and hot topics in industry
  • Own the role of point person to assist teams with day-to-day challenges, and manage technology assets including server upgrades, intranet site, and internal reporting
  • Establish internal performance monitoring and review results periodically to recommend changes to Internal Audit methodology and assist with implementing the change
What do you need to succeed?
  • Working knowledge of key GRC or audit systems, e.g. Archer
  • Experience with managing major system implementations with time-sensitive deliveries
  • Demonstrated ability to team well with peers and to build and maintain relationships with all employee levels
  • Strong technology skills with experience in the use of large volumes of data and MS Office
  • Strong communicator, both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively influence key players, and build and maintain relationships
  • Profound sense of ethics and the ability to deal with pressure and resolve conflicts
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, data intuition and problem solving skills
The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
