Role

The Senior Director, Optical and COE Servicesleads a collection of important adjacent businesses within our grocery network . Their primary focus is to act as the General Manager of our Optical business, leading merchandising, control label development, marketing and a store network of 184 Optical clinics. A critical deliverable of this role will be the development and launch of a strategy to unleash the next phase of our growth, reaching more Canadians through the power of the Loblaw ecosystem. The Senior Director is also responsible for several front-end services in our stores such as Lottery, Coin-star, and Rug Doctor.

We are seeking a seasoned leader who is able to develop and implement a strategic vision with a progressive, customer centric-approach, and manage the overall P&L of the business. A key requirement for this role is to demonstrate curiosity in a much broader and more complex business environment, transcending our traditional competitive landscape by leveraging our immense data, loyalty, and customer advantages. Knowledge and/or experience in the Canadian or international eyewear industry is an asset, but not required. We have incredibly deep industry expertise on our team – you bring a leadership toolkit that can effectively leverage this and unleash insights through empathy, collaboration, strategy, customer focus and results-orientation. This position reports to the VP, National Liquor, Optical, and COE Services.

Responsibilities:

  • Define and implement the long-term vision, customer experience and business strategy of the Optical business. Design and launch our eyewear e-commerce channel.
  • Lead all aspects of the business, including merchandising, control label development, store operations, marketing and loyalty.
  • Own the full Optical P&L including the development of plans to deliver it - effectively manage and drive the delivery of the business KPIs (sales, profit, labour, shrink, OSAT, colleague engagement). Adapt plans as necessary to hit objectives through the weekly LE process.
  • Define operational metrics and standards for the business and develop plans and processes to achieve them
  • Build and manage close relationships and champion the team with multiple key stakeholders across the broader enterprise (e.g., operations, loyalty, supply chain, real estate, learning and development) to collaborate closely and achieve our joint goals
  • Collaboratively plan activities and develop strong relationships with the vendor community in order to maximize sales & profit and position Loblaw for growth ahead of market.
  • Coach, develop and mentor direct reports. This includes explicit consideration of on-the-job training needs for each colleague, arranging appropriate training, providing timely feedback and overseeing colleague development.
  • Continue to recruit and grow a best in class team and evolve the structure and working model to maximize the impact of the team
  • Store visits across the country
  • Act as the senior Loblaw contact for COE services businesses
  • Design and implement initiatives to increase colleague engagement and capability, improve labour productivity and improve recruitment and retention experience.
  • Monitor the competitive environment to ensure in-depth knowledge of new competition entering the market and develop a planned response.
  • Represent and be the face of Loblaw for key external stakeholders including suppliers, regulators, and provincial colleges of opticians
  • Plan and develop various meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars etc focused on business growth, building relationships, customer centricity and colleague wellbeing.
  • Actively champion an inclusive workplace with a commitment to raising awareness, ongoing conversations, and education.

Job Qualifications

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree; 7+ years of experience, including senior level roles leading cross functional teams
  • A recognized leader with a successful track record of operating and scaling a business
  • Demonstrated ability to drive strategy as well as day to day execution of a complex business
  • Strategic acumen, supported by a strong analytical toolkit and natural curiosity
  • Extensive experience developing and delivering a P&L
  • An effective change agent who possesses the influencing skills needed to help the organization adopt new ways of thinking and to embrace more sophisticated business tools
  • Demonstrated success leading teams through ambiguity and complexity to provide clear direction in a fast-paced, highly competitive environment
  • High degree of proactive “hands-on” critical thinking and mobilizing actions
  • A thoughtful leader who is able to navigate the interdependent relationships across the organization, as well as external partners and stakeholders
