Resident Support Aide Role and Responsibilities:

  • Assists the care team in providing non-care related activities, including:
    • Act as a spotter for residents requiring a 2 person lift or transfer
    • Provide assistance to residents during meal time
    • Portering residents to activities or meals
    • Making residents’ beds, changing linens
    • Tidying resident closets and drawers as requested
    • Provide one-on-one or small group visiting programs to offer companionship to a resident, sit with and do an activity of resident choice
    • Assisting with distribution of snacks
    • Assist PSWs with rounds, provide assistance as directed
    • Label personal items in resident rooms
    • Assist in cleaning and disinfection of resident side tables, wheelchairs and walkers and other areas as assigned

Marketing & Occupancy:

  • Effectively communicates and interacts with residents, family members, visitors, staff and volunteers in a courteous and professional manner

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Conducts duties in accordance with the policies and procedures of the long term care home, as well as, government regulations, laws and policies as they may apply
  • Understands and follows all health and safety policies and procedures. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, other staff members and residents
  • Promptly reports all actual or potential hazardous situations or injuries to immediate supervisor
  • Maintains confidentiality of residents’ personal information
  • Good understanding of infection control practices to ensure the safety of residents and staff

Operational & Administrative Systems:

  • Attends in-service education sessions, staff meetings, and workshops as directed
  • Identifies and documents building/equipment breakdowns in maintenance log

Other:

  • Performs other related duties as required

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal skills (experience in volunteering and customer service is an asset)
  • Must be sensitive and empathetic to the needs of the residents and able to communicate confidently
  • Interest and ability to work with seniors
  • Some awareness of the impacts of dementia

Special Requirements:

  • Work requires constant standing and walking, some bending, twisting and lifting
  • Work is performed indoors in well-lit ventilated rooms
  • May be exposed to communicable disease.
  • Must be prepared to respond to emergency situations (training to be provided onsite)
  • Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Persons Check required
  • Ability / availability to work evenings/ weekends

Qualifications

  • High School graduate,
  • Strong attention to detail and quick problem-solving skills,
  • Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills as you will be required to speak to individuals and provide direction,
  • Comfortable wearing PPE and checking temperatures from a safe distance,
  • Good documentation skills,
  • Good data entry and computer skills,
  • Sense of responsibility, integrity and confidentiality,
  • Must be professional, patient, courteous,
  • Must be able to lift,
  • Healthcare/medical, retail or security desk background an asset,
  • Must be comfortable working in a COVID-19 positive environment,
  • Must be willing to get swabbed for COVID-19
  • Availability to work a variety of shifts (days, evenings, nights) 7 days per week
  • Must have a clear vulnerable sector screen, no older than 6 months, TB test results less than 6 months old, must be able to provide three supervisory references.
  • Mill Creek Care Centre recognizes the importance of immunization to protect our residents, staff and others from COVID-19. As such, subject to any accommodation required by applicable human rights legislation, it will be a condition of employment that all new hires have received, at minimum, the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine approved by Health Canada with the second dose scheduled.
