As one of Canada’s largest not for profit leaders in wildlife conservation, research, and advocacy, we are seeking to fill the following position:

Policy Researcher - Aquatic Connectivity (6-month term)

Job Summary

The Policy Researcher – Aquatic Connectivity, in reporting to the Senior Conservation Biologist – Freshwater Ecology and working closely with the National Aquatic Connectivity Advocate, will support our watershed connectivity restoration planning with research of the legal, regulatory and policy framework applicable to the remediation of freshwater barriers and fish habitat restoration in Alberta. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the first research conducted in Canada on this topic. It is anticipated that this research will assist CWF’s efforts to ramp up the removal and remediation of dams and other barriers that threaten fish movement and migration.

Responsibilities:
  • Research Alberta and federal legal and policy frameworks that apply to aquatic barrier remediation.
  • Conduct interviews with partner organizations, government representatives and experts about their experience operating within current legal and policy regime.
  • Research and identify best practices in other jurisdictions and opportunities for reform.
  • Produce a report based on research (the first of its kind in Canada) which documents the state of applicable law and policy in Alberta, contrasts it with other jurisdictions in Canada, and identifies examples of best practice to inform future action on barrier remediation and legal and policy reform.
  • Attend and present final research findings to partner organizations.
  • Conduct other related research tasks as needed.

Experience Needed
  • Post-secondary degree in environmental studies, biology, applied science, law or a mixture thereof.
  • Educational or employment experience in policy analysis, comparative policy reviews.
  • Experience conducting literature reviews.
  • Experience writing professional papers, reports and critical analyses.
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s regulation and policy system would be an asset.

Working Conditions
  • Full-time 6-month contract position with possibility of renewal.
  • Location: The ideal candidate will be based out of Head Office in Ottawa, ON. Two days per week working from home is permitted (hybrid working). We are open to accepting remote candidates from anywhere in Canada.
