About the Organization
Imhotep’s Legacy Academy ( ILA ) is a university-community partnership that seeks to improve the representation of African Canadians in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) studies and careers.

ILA’s Engaging African Nova Scotian Youth in Agriculture and Community Food Security Project, in partnership with the Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs, the African Canadian Services Branch, the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, and Perennia, creates opportunities for youth via community food growing projects in several African Nova Scotian communities, with a goal to increase agri-food employment opportunities and develop agricultural entrepreneurship skills.

Job Summary
The Outreach and Communications Officer [(Engaging African Nova Scotian Youth (EANSY) in Agriculture and Community Food Security] recruits stakeholders for ILA and communicates the vision and strategy of ILA throughout the African Nova Scotian community.

The Outreach and Communications Officer will focus on outreach to the African Nova Scotian (ANS) communities by increasing participation of junior high and high school students in ILA’s STEM programs, increasing participation of ANS communities in ILA employment opportunities, and finding new venues for expansion.

They will also assist in tasks to support ILA operations and connect with schools and communities in every Regional Centre for Education across the province, introducing students, school administrators, and community members to ILA’s programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Meet with parents and prospective participants from African Nova Scotian communities.
  • Identify community support, promote ILA programs, strengthen ILA’s knowledge about community needs and assess how ILA programs may be applied in their fulfillment.
  • Provide logistical support for special events, meetings, conferences and training sessions as required (i.e. schedule meeting rooms and equipment, etc.).
  • Arrange travel itineraries (including transportation, accommodation and meals for staff), meetings, and teleconferences.

Note
Occasional travel to African Nova Scotian communities across Nova Scotia will be required.

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory Criminal (Vulnerable Sector) Background Check and Child Abuse Register Checks. The successful candidate will be reimbursed by ILA for these costs.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in a communication-related field.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the African Nova Scotian communities, their history and social structures.
  • Innovative thinker and result-driven.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Nova Scotia driver’s license.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and web applications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to create a results-driven, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage competing deadlines.

Assets
  • Communal ties to one or more historical Black communities in Nova Scotia either through residency or ancestry.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities and a quick learner.
