MAJOR PROJECT PLANNER - COMMUNITY PLANNING

Temporary Full Time (2 Years)

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-kwuh-tlum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the sq̓əc̓iy̓aɁɬ təməxʷ (Katzie), and other Coast Salish Peoples.

One of BC’s Top Employers, the City of Coquitlam offers meaningful career opportunities to make a difference within the local community. As the sixth largest city in BC, we are home to more than 150,000 residents. Our diverse municipality is a great place to work as it continues to grow through innovative urban design, inspiring arts, culture and recreation programs, and state-of-the-art transportation systems. Our brand is built on managing our resources in a responsible and sustainable manner, while supporting a vibrant, growing regional urban centre. We envision a bright future in Coquitlam that we hope includes you!

We are currently seeking a talented and committed urban planning professional to join the City’s Planning and Development team. The Major Project Planner will be responsible for leading major long-range community planning projects. Your responsibilities will include leading public consultation programs, compiling comprehensive Council reports, and providing policy recommendations to your manager for consideration by the Council. As a member of the Community Planning team, you will also be part of the Division’s leadership group and may oversee other technical or professional staff on a project-by-project basis.

The successful candidate for this position must be able to exercise independent judgment to spearhead, shape, and finalize various programs and projects. They will also develop and implement politically sensitive public consultation processes that inform planning policies, and in conjunction with the Manager and more senior level staff, develop and present planning process results and recommended policies to Council and their Committees.

Our preferred candidate must possess a thorough understanding of the principles, practices, and goals of Planning. Proven experience in long-range urban planning project management and leading the development of land use visions and plans, urban redevelopment, transit-oriented and ‘greenfield’ development, urban design, and social and multicultural planning will also be considered an asset. The ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, consultants and the public, are essential to the incumbent’s success.

At least 5 years of progressive professional Planning experience, preferably in a municipal setting. A university degree in a related discipline paired with a graduate degree in Community and Regional Planning is desired. Membership or eligibility for membership in a professional association (e.g. Planning Institute of British Columbia; Canadian Institute of Planners) is preferred, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid British Columbia Driver’s License (or equivalent) is a requirement.

The City offers a competitive salary of $53.97 - $63.89 (2022 rates) as well as a comprehensive benefits package. This position is based in Coquitlam with some flexible, hybrid work options available. Applicants under consideration may be required to undergo a police information check (with no adverse reports) as well as submit an acceptable driving record.
