We are looking for an instrument enthusiast with a hunger for problem-solving to become our Laboratory Technicianor a more experienced Technologist.


The ROLE

The Lab Technician is responsible for the maintenance of our lab facilities and equipment while providing support to the R&D Team. This role includes routine service and repair of equipment, set up of new equipment, training of new equipment users, selected calibration tasks, and contribution to new or improved standard operating procedures.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Lab Duties

  • Maintain high-level operation and availability of laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Support the longevity of laboratory equipment with regularly scheduled service and operator oversight
  • Become our first contact for training and supporting new users on lab instruments
  • Update the department on the operational status of equipment monthly
  • Assess and propose solutions to instrument problems
  • Communicate with distributors to facilitate non-routine repairs
  • Prepare purchase requisitions for the Cell Chemistry Team and the laboratory
  • Maintain general cleanliness and safety in the lab environment
  • Oversight of the shared weekly cleaning schedule
  • Partial of complete gas cylinder inventory management
  • Attend training or educational seminars to expand understanding of our equipment capabilities
  • Write and update standard operating procedures for laboratory equipment and methods
  • Occasional assistance with data collection.


Calibration Duties

  • Interact with external calibration contractors as required
  • Coordinate with calibration supervisor to perform the scheduled calibrations on R&D equipment
  • Regular verification of instrument performance


Research Duties

  • Research support depends on the candidate’s career aspirations and abilities. This will involve working under the guidance of research scientists and assisting in developing new R&D methods and practices.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSc. in Chemistry or Physics with broad experience operating lab instrumentation, or 2-year Technical/College Diploma with relevant experience.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills with proven ability to identify, evaluate and solve problems.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience with any of Labview/C/C++/Scripting languages (such as Python or Ruby)/Unix or Linux shell scripting would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision in a fast-paced and collaborative team environment.
  • Basic mechanical proficiency/manual dexterity is required and additional experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience working in an industrial research laboratory would be an asset.
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office


Note:This is an on-site position.
