Are you looking to…

• Act as discipline lead for aquatic ecology or surface water for baseline, environmental assessments, regulatory applications, construction projects and monitoring programs for various types of developments including power, mines, oil and gas facilities, and pipelines
• Support a variety of specialized project areas including aquatic studies, habitat assessments, fish health studies, aquatic effects assessments supporting risk assessments, and/or remediation techniques in aquatic habitats
• Mentor and develop junior team members
• Have autonomy and the opportunity to interact and work with a community of technical experts from other Matrix regions.
• Partner with extensive, long standing clients such as municipal governments, conservation authorities, academia, and private industry.

As an Intermediate Aquatic Scientist, you will join our Calgary, Albertaoffice as part of our Calgary Aquatics team. Other western office locations will also be considered. The successful applicant will be involved in a broad range of projects with responsibilities as follows:

• Actively participate in maintaining Matrix’s strong safety culture
• Contribute effectively as part of a collaborative team
• Summarize and manipulate field datasets and other environmental information
• Prepare technical reports
• Apply current scientific knowledge to perform advanced data analysis including statistics and preparation of technical reports
• Provide advice to internal and external clients related to large development environmental assessments including environmental impact assessment strategy, best management and mitigation practices and environmental monitoring programs
• Execute complex biological investigations and oversee field surveys

What We Are Looking For

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, or related field
• Eligible for professional designation in a relevant organization (i.e. P. Biol., P. Ag., etc.)
• 7-10 years of consulting experience related to aquatics would be an asset
• Familiarity with pertinent regulatory requirements and processes (e.g., AlbertaWater Act, Federal Fisheries Act, etc.)
• Demonstrate knowledge of the environmental assessment process in Alberta (Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act) and Canada (Impact Assessment Act) as related to effects on aquatic environments
• Abilities in the areas of aquatic study design, field sampling protocols, statistical analysis and report preparation and review
• Project management skills including developing and monitoring of budgets, project scoping and scheduling, organizational skills; field logistics and reporting
• Possess strong attention to detail as well as good organizational skills
• Excellent written communication and technical report writing abilities
• Experience managing client relationships
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other disciplines on integrated assessments
• Willing and open to perform field work over extended periods of time
• Experience with remote work including helicopter work and off highway vehicles would be considered an asset
• Able to lift and carry up to 20 kg
• Possess a valid class 5 driver’s license with no driving restrictions
• Strong safety mindset and demonstrated safety leadership
