Intercultural Community Coordinator

Location:Westmorland-Albert, NB

Hours of Work: 23 hours per week

Since 1981, Crossroads for Women has been empowering and assisting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault by providing education, resources, emergency shelter, and crisis intervention 24/7 for South Eastern New Brunswick. Our Transition House welcomes more than 250 women and 115 children every year.

New Brunswick Multicultural Council

NBMC is the bilingual nonprofit, umbrella organization for established and emerging multicultural/ethno-cultural associations and immigrant-serving agencies in the province. Since 1983, NBMC has played a key advisory role to federal, provincial, and municipal levels of government on issues relating to multiculturalism, immigration, newcomer settlement, retention, and labor market integration. NBMC is also valued by the settlement and multicultural community as a central coordinating/capacity-building body that promotes efficiency, avoids duplication of services, and allows for an exchange of best practices and other resources through its network of organizations, contacts, partners, etc.

Project Description

As a continuation of its advocacy role in supporting women’s rights and multiculturism in NB, NBMC recently embarked on a provincial anti-domestic and intimate partner violence project for culturally and linguistically diverse non-status, refugees, and immigrant women (NSRI). The project is a resistant response to several multi-layers, structural and systematic barriers the NSRI women experience while accessing the domestic and intimate partner violence (D/IPV) support services in NB. As a team of intercultural community and provincial coordinators in Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton, and Rural Communities, we endeavor to identify those barriers and build intercultural capacity, skills, tools, and resources for supporting NSRI women.

Summary, Nature and Scope

Under the direction of the Manager, Women and Gender Initiatives and in accordance with the NBMC stated purposes, the Intercultural Community Coordinator will: serve as a liaison for the Partner Agencies and the community to identify gaps and develop intercultural domestic and intimate partner violence (D/IPV) tools, resources and adapted supports to better support non-status, refugee, and immigrant (NSRI) women across the region. The position will be at Crossroads for Women Inc., in Moncton, NB. This position is for a 20-month contract with the possibility of renewal after the contract’s completion pending funding approval.

The nature and scope of this position is such that a close relationship must be maintained with all NBMC members, the staff of Crossroads, and relevant community stakeholders. Key government partners include Women and Gender Equality (federal); IRCC (federal); Women’s Equality Branch (provincial); Justice and Public Safety (provincial); Social Development (provincial).

As the successful candidate you are an effective communicator with strong organizational and interpersonal skill sets. You are diplomatic, creative, and resourceful. You have knowledge and experience in the DIPV and/or settlement sector in New Brunswick. You are passionate about promoting multiculturalism and collaboration in New Brunswick and are ready to make a difference.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain, build, and foster consistent communication with the anti-D/IPV sector, immigrant settlement agencies, and all other gender-based violence initiatives in the partner organization’s location.
  • Support in conducting needs and assets assessment for NSRI women in the region.
  • Collaborate with the women and gender initiatives manager to collate and develop a resource support list of social determinants of health (direct and indirect) that are available locally.
  • Create channels between NSRI women experiencing D/IPV in the agency region and D/IPV sector, settlement agencies, different multicultural resources, and services needed.
  • Liaise with the D/IPV and settlement sector to determine the gaps, issues, and needs of the NSRI women experiencing D/IPV in the region.
  • Promote the project to raise awareness about domestic and intimate partner violence.
  • Be the main point of contact for the project in the region.
  • Identify possible promising practices and pathways to inclusion for NSRI women.
  • Develop/distribute multilingual awareness resources in the region.
  • Deliver information sessions for NSRI women.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 years’ experience in the women’s advancement sector, D/IPV sector or immigrant settlement sector or related field.
  • Degree in Social Sciences, Business /Administration, Hospitality, and /or recognized Communications /Public Relations related studies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in French and English required, additional languages a strong asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail is necessary.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Exceptionally organized, able to handle numerous projects at the same time and demonstrate initiative, work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge and experience working with victims of intimate partner violence.
  • Flexible, resourceful, outgoing, and prepared to take on new tasks. ·
  • Experience in taking meeting minutes.
  • Experience in managing social media and online communities.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat DC, Survey Monkey and Doodle. ·
  • Event management experience an asset.
  • Familiarity with immigrant women’s issues an asset.
  • Capable of partnering and working with other community organizations and immigration service providers at the local and provincial levels.
  • Able to work both under limited supervision and as part of a team.
  • Discretion, confidentiality, and compliance with the Privacy Act.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build trusting relationships with various stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • A criminal record & vulnerable sector check is a condition of employment.
  • A social development check is a condition of employment.
  • Must reside in the Greater Moncton area.
  • Candidates must have a valid driver’s license; access to a vehicle is an asset.

Working hours, compensation, and term of position

  • 23 hours per week
  • 20-month contract with possibility of renewal

Work and travel on evenings and weekends for activities across the region will sometimes be required in this position. The candidate will have the option to manage their own schedule to meet the position requirements effectively without incurring overtime.The employer will reimburse approved travel expenses.
