The work of Good Shepherd is based on a fundamental belief in providing hope and restoring dignity to the most vulnerable members of our community. Our services include emergency food and clothing; daily hot meals; emergency shelters for men, youth, families, women and children; transitional housing and education for homeless and street-involved youth; hospice palliative care; community mental health programs; and supportive housing programs. We are committed to integrating Harm Reduction practices into our programs and to prioritizing the rights, dignity, and choices of those who use substances. We are seeking aHuman Resources Manager to join the Good Shepherd team, a role that demands a strong commitment to our Mission and Values. The ideal candidate will provide leadership, have some union experience, and role modeling behaviors that align with our Mission, Vision, and Values. This position calls for service delivery in a dignified, culturally-competent, and respectful manner, promoting a workplace culture that embraces anti-racism and anti-oppression principles.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives aligned with Good Shepherd’s overall strategy.
  • Bridge management and employee relations by addressing demands, grievances, or other issues.
  • Utilize your ability to understand goals and recommend new approaches, policies and procedures, and initiatives to affect continual improvements in organizational objectives, productivity and development of HR.
  • Provide leadership and consulting support in areas of team building, conflict resolution, performance management, progressive discipline, recruitment, compensation, employee development, disability management, etc. Manage comprehensive on-boarding programs.
  • Participate in recruitment processes, manage new employee information, and develop training programs for key HR areas like onboarding, performance management, and employee relations.
  • Support current and future needs through the development, engagement, motivation, and preservation of human resources.
  • Oversee and manage a performance appraisal system for respective client groups.
  • Maintain compensation and benefits program and assess personnel needs for respective client groups.
  • Ensure legal compliance throughout human resource management.
  • Develop and monitor overall HR strategies, systems, tactics, and procedures across the organization.
  • Nurture a positive working environment, maintaining a program of employee relations.
  • Report to management and provide decision support through HR reports and metrics.
  • Oversee and manage a training and development program to educate coworkers about staff tools, policies, and procedures as required.
  • Work closely with various departments, assisting line managers to understand and implement policies and procedures.
  • Will act as a central communication hub for staff and service users, ensuring efficient information flow.
  • Responsibilities also include respecting confidentiality and positively representing Good Shepherd and its services.
  • Ensure adherence to established rules, procedures, policies, and code of conduct, along with work scheduling and attendance policies.
  • Involve in continuous quality improvement projects, integrate our mission and values into all employment systems, and stay updated with trends in human resources. You will also handle health and safety programs, manage WSIB claims, and lead health and safety training initiatives.
  • Support colleagues and cross train as required.

What You’ll Bring to Our Team

  • Post-secondary in Human Resources Management or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in HR roles, ideally including leadership experience
  • Strong understanding of HR best practices, employment legislation, and industry trends.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • People-oriented and results-driven.
  • Knowledge of HR systems and databases.
  • Proficient in HRIS systems and MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to architect strategy along with leadership skills.
  • Excellent active listening, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Competence to build and effectively manage interpersonal relationships at all levels of the company.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the culture, values and best practices of the program and Good Shepherd
  • Valid Driver’s license and access to a vehicle an asset

  • Demonstrated understanding of workplace health and safety practices and understanding of an employer’s responsibility under current legislation
