Position Description

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Manager - Building Services & Biomedical Engineering, or delegate, i.e., Charge Technologist, provides support services within the Biomedical Engineering Department across all SJHH sites. Major duties include, but not limited to: troubleshooting, repair, calibration and maintenance of Biomedical equipment and devices that the incumbent is trained on and qualified/certified to work on. Participates in St. Joseph’s Healthcare International Outreach Program as time, availability and experience allows. Participates in various projects related to biomedical systems, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contributes to the corporate efforts and initiatives, as appropriate, to enhance SJHH’s mission, vision and values
  • Performs duties in a manner that demonstrates the employee’s commitment to developing a culture of patient and staff safety through accountability, reliability, trust and team work
  • Works in compliance of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations, reporting hazards, deficiencies and contraventions of the Act, in a timely manner
  • Staff are encouraged to participate in activities with other organizations and with the community.
  • Performs corrective, preventative and performance-based maintenance and testing on all types of medical equipment and devices as assigned. These may include but not limited to: IV Systems, Infusion Pumps, Defibrillators/AED’s, Patient monitors, Telemetry, Incubators and warmers, Fetal Monitors, Ultrasound/Bladder Scanners, EKG (ECG), Stress Test Stress Systems, Ventilators, Respiratory Equipment, Laser/Optical Systems, Endoscopy Equipment, and Operating Room Equipment
  • Records corrective and test/performance verification data in the department maintenance database system for financial planning, inventory accounting and regulatory reference, including historical data
  • Works with the work order/asset management system for the department
  • Controls and orders supplies or parts to enable maintenance and repairs
  • Participates in educational opportunities as required and available to support new technologies and patient safety. i.e., new equipment training
  • With appropriate training and demonstrated ability may participate in and provide on call support after hours to all SJHH sites
  • Participates in the department Quality Control Program, participates in various departmental and project meetings.
  • Interfaces with contacts, medical equipment/device vendors, service facilities, regulatory agencies, Nursing and other clinical staff

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 3 year Community College Diploma Program in Biomedical Technology / Engineering, Electronics Technology / Engineering or Electrical Technology/Engineering with completion of a basic Physiology and Anatomy course would be an advantage
  • Undergraduate Degree in Biomedical Engineering or Electrical/Electronics Engineering preferred
  • BMET Certification required
  • EIT or PEng membership preferred
  • Minimum 4 year work experience in biomedical/clinical technology/engineering field in wide range of experience in biomedical equipment/devices maintenance
  • 6-10 years work experience preferred
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to develop own work schedule and determine method and mode of repairs based on industry standard and best practices
  • Must possess an understanding of computers and should have some knowledge of networked architecture
  • Must be knowledgeable in the use of Microsoft Office applications and have a demonstrated ability to learn other applications as required
  • Must have good communication skills, both oral and written, as daily interaction with other staff throughout the department and the hospital
  • Should have analytical skills for problem solving and troubleshooting various types of issues with medical equipment, including but not limited to, electronic, electrical, and mechanical issues, etc.

HOURS OF WORK:
Monday to Friday; Days, rotating on-call/on-standby shifts
