Founded in 2011, Broadhead Brewing Company Ltd is a well-established, recognized and trusted brand within Ottawa’s vibrant craft brewing community. Having recently built a state-of-the-art brewing facility, Broadhead has entered a new era, and we’re looking for driven, passionate and talented people to enhance our vibrant, DIY culture and help write the next chapter.

We are currently seeking a brewery assistant to join our team. The position reports to the Brewmaster and is responsible for monitoring and carrying out brew house, production and cellaring operations. The is a key position on the brewing/production team and you must be a self-starter with great energy and true passion for craft beer. Our team works together under minimal supervision to execute daily brewing operations, lead with innovation and creativity on project brews, facilitate best practices in regards to quality and safety standards, and actively participate in sales and marketing efforts through beer education and public relations.

Duties:

  • Perform all tasks associated with making great and consistent craft beers, from milling to the packaging tank.
  • Conduct pre-inspections and operate all equipment associated with the brewing and packaging processes. Equipment includes but not limited to the malt mill, mash/lauter tun, boil kettle/whirlpool, DE filter, keg-washer, canning line, centrifugal pumps and shrink tunnels.
  • Provide input on equipment optimization throughout growth initiatives.
  • Prepare, organize and track all materials used during the brewing process. Monitor the processes and makes adjustments as required to meet Broadhead’s high quality standards. Maintain accurate and timely reporting throughout the brewing/filtering and packaging processes.
  • Collect samples of wort, beer and finished goods throughout the brewing, filtration and packaging processes.
  • Perform thorough sanitation duties including the cleaning and maintenance of equipment and utensils to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Assist with packaging product for online sales and home delivery generally.
  • Provide general assistance to any other brewery department as required.

Quality and Freshness:

  • Work closely with the Brewmaster, you will monitor the quality of wort production, fermentation, filtrations, equipment performance as well as safety and area sanitation.
  • Take measurements and conduct standardized tests on beer/wort to ensure compliance with Broadhead’s product quality standards; factors such as gravity, pH, CO2 and fill levels.
  • Conduct sensory evaluation such as Diacetyl, 3-MBT, DMS to proactively detect potential brewing quality concerns.
  • The quality and freshness of our products from raw material to the consumer is everyone’s responsibility, together we help to facilitate high standards, resolutions and customer services at every opportunity. You will be an ambassador of the brewery whenever the opportunity arises.

Health and Safety:

  • Promote accident prevention by eliminating potential hazards and incorporating proper body mechanics during work procedures.
  • Inspects equipment and performance continuous housekeeping duties to meet the sanitation expectations.

Key Competencies Required

  • Ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of brewing/packaging processes.
  • Must be able to work in a team oriented and "Safety First" environment.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical equipment and the willingness to learn.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs.
  • Ability to work at heights.
  • Available and able to work 10-12 hour shifts as needed. (Weekends and holiday schedules as required).
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Energetic, motivated, enthusiastic and diligent.
