Production Welder - Apprentice (1st, 2nd or 3rd Year)
Position Summary:
Responsible for the welding and fabrication of Variperm parts and products to specifications identified in job order documentation.
Work Schedule:
This position may involve various shifts and overtime hours depending on the scope of work and plant activity.
Duties:
- Perform production welding in accordance to Variperm Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS), including post weld heat treatment
- Read blueprints and drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout
- Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements
- Set up components for welding according to specifications
- Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded
- Align components using calipers, rulers etc. and clamp pieces
- Directing and providing instruction to welder helpers
- Ensuring proper use and care of equipment at all times
- Ensuring all welding equipment is in proper working order and maintained
- Ensuring clean and safe work areas
- Assist in other plant operations as required
- Follow and understand both oral and written instructions in English
- Adhere to health, safety, and quality policies, as well as all other company policies and procedures
Competencies
- Grade 12 or GED or equivalent education
- Team Player
- Mechanically inclined
- Good communicator both verbal and written
- Ability to read and understand manufacturing drawing, job order documentation, and weld procedure specifications
- Able to follow and understand both oral and written instructions in English
- Grade 12 basic math skills
- Good attention to detail
- Dedicated to continuous improvement
Qualifications/Requirements
- Professional accreditation in welding or equivalent experience is an asset
- Excellent welding and fabrication skills
- Experience in using electrical or manual tools
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings
- Knowledge of oilfield tubulars and threads
- Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective clothing (face-shield, gloves etc.)
- Forklift and overhead crane training or experience an asset
- Stand or walk for long periods of time
- Use arms and hands to reach for, handle or manipulate materials
- Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs, lift items weighing more than 50 lbs with assistance from other workers, forklift and/or overhead hoist
- Exposure to fine dust and airborne particles, high noise level
- Good physical fitness
