Your role

The Radio Producer for CBC Vancouver reports directly to the Director of Programming.

In this leadership role, you will produce Vancouver’s afternoon drive radio show in an inclusive team environment. You will program, select and direct story content working with an integrated team of journalists, choose the best and most compelling content that reflects a diverse range of stories for rollout on multiple platforms. The mission is to ensure our programming continues to be the place the audience of Metro Vancouver turns to for the latest news and information.

You will place a strong emphasis on community reflection and BIPOC representation, developing the team’s writing, production and journalistic skills and social media performance. In this role you will also coordinate with the assignment desk/other programs and leaders.

You will plan, conceive, organize, and develop the production and realization of a program segment, program, or series for radio and digital platforms. A deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspectives, opinions and experiences is something this individual values and reflects in all programming decisions.

You are also responsible for ensuring the work adheres to CBC journalistic and program policies, standards and practices. Nevertheless, there is wide latitude for initiative, independent judgement and creativity. There is also a regular and ongoing requirement to coordinate the work of others.

Main Responsibilities
  • Conceives and develops local programming which reflects Vancouver today, advancing the news agenda, and ensuring we are on top of what people living in Vancouver need to know, when they need to know it.
  • Develops current affairs content including assigning, researching, gathering, writing and/or editing. As required, commissions writing and/or research. Prepares and edits scripts.
  • Exercises editorial responsibility as delegated by the Programming Director, and news/regional Management.
  • Expands the reach of CBC Vancouver’s presence on social networks.
As Required, Performs The Following Tasks
  • Direct talent, sound and/or image.
  • Select, re-write and/or edit copy or text written by others.
  • Identify, develop and maintain contacts appropriate to the area of assignment.
  • Edit and mix, or direct the editing and mixing of audio and/or visual elements.
  • Assure the maintenance of a level of communication with members of the audience which is both feasible and appropriate to the style and nature of the program, and participate in this activity as necessary.
Your Profile
  • University degree or equivalent.
  • Five years’ experience of which three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry, which is directly related to the area of assignment.
  • Proven ability in leading a team of journalists.
  • Excellent journalistic judgment and ability. Superior writing, vetting and editing skills.
  • Familiarity with multiplatform program offerings and how to move content effectively across multiple platforms.
  • Smart, curious and creative.
  • Knowledge of Vancouver; its people, places, stories, issues and politics.
  • Familiarity and proven connections with Black, Indigenous and People of Colour communities, people living with a disability, and other underrepresented communities in British Columbia and across Canada.
  • Highly developed leadership and coaching skills. Skilled at coaching inexperienced employees, while also leading and challenging experienced journalists.
  • Ability to see the "big picture" as well as managing the details of daily program offerings.
  • You value diversity of thought and experience and strive to create a work culture that is highly collaborative, inclusive and respectful.
  • Ability to demonstrate a deep understanding and appreciation of the different cultures and experiences that make up contemporary Canada (new, diverse, younger audience). Ability to elevate diverse perspectives, ideas and differing points of view.
  • Flexibility and adaptability; ability to cope with new demands and additional platforms. Ability to work to multiple deadlines under pressure.
