The Opportunity:

Canfor is currently seeking a motivated and talent student to join our team as a Process Engineer Co-opat our pulp operations.

The Role:
In this role, the successful candidate will work on site at our pulpmill location primarily under the direction of a Process Engineer or Process Specialist. Responsibilities of this role will include:

  • Process testing crosschecks, these include: K#, consistency, residual, brightness, etc.
  • Process performance monitoring, this includes a series of sampling and testing of non-routine locations for the purpose of evaluating efficiency or performance issues. i.e. Tertiary chip screen reject testing, washer and wash press efficiency testing, brown stock soda profile testing, etc.
  • Calibration of new process testing equipment. Pulpeye – kappa, freeness, brightness calibration. Sampling the chip belts, sending out samples and coordinating with FP Innovations for calibration new chip analyzers.
  • Developing a K number to Kappa number relationship for our pulp.
  • Helping with various sample collection and analysis as required.
  • Helping with data collection and analysis as required.

Upcoming and ongoing projects that the co-op student will assist the area engineers with:

  • Continue to work with the Pulpeye calibration and optimization
  • Help with the statistical analysis / modeling work on the optical fiber properties being generated by the Pulpeye
  • Continued Kappa and K number work
  • Brownstock soda profile testing for optimization and advanced justification work
  • Ongoing testing crosschecks
  • Other help as needed

It is our intention to provide the student with an opportunity to become familiar with the Kraft pulp process and to utilize the theoretical knowledge of engineering principles in a work situation.

The student engineer will work independently and as a team member with the opportunity for input from a variety of resources including experienced Professional Engineers, mill operators and Maintenance personnel. The successful applicants will gain practical experience in various aspects of Chemical Engineering.


The Candidate:

  • Minimum two years completed in a Chemical Engineering or Chemistry Program.
  • Strong PC skills required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous Pulpmill experience or other industrial experience an asset.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision.
