The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba is looking for a Prison Law Clinic Development & Engagement Coordinator. This position works with project inception partners (Faculty of Law and Legal Aid Manitoba) to assist in the development of a Prison Law Clinic (PLC) in which law students provide legal services as part of their legal educations to inmates in federal and provincial correctional institutions in Manitoba.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • Undergraduate degree or college diploma in a relevant discipline is required.
  • Experience working and developing relationships with Indigenous communities is required.
  • Experience in project and meeting planning and coordination is preferred.
  • Experience in building strategic partnerships with external stakeholders is preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Cultural competency including sensitivity around cultural protocols is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, and exercise judgment and discretion is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and establish work priorities to meet deadlines is required.
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team environment is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing as well as excellent listening and interviewing skills is required.
  • Willingness to travel to meetings and communities is required.
  • Flexibility with work hours is required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous communities in Manitoba and concerns with respect to justice is desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the impact of colonization, racism, geography, and poverty is an asset.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
