We currently have an exciting casual opportunity for you to bring your excellent work ethic as a dedicated Power Engineer to join our Plant Services and Construction team at Royal Columbian Hospital located in New Westminster, B.C.

Detailed Overview: Operates, maintains, repairs and modifies elements, components and appliances associated with the steam distribution, steam condensate, hot water heating, heating ventilation and air conditioning, chilled water, medical air/vacuum and instrumentation air compressors as well as mechanical power generation systems at a 3rd Class Power Engineer’s level in conformance with accepted regulatory codes, Worksafe BC regulations and established Hospital policies and procedures. Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of high pressure steam boilers, hot water boilers, chillers, diesel generators and auxiliary equipment in the Energy Centre, in accordance with the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
  • Monitors and operates Direct Digital Controls/Building Automation System. Monitors status and operates other integrated campus wide control and monitoring systems and responds to warnings and alarms. Monitors and records operating data, meter readings and makes related calculations as required.
  • Monitors, adjusts and repairs HVAC systems by operating a variety of mechanical, pneumatic and/or electronic control systems and performing such tasks as altering systems operating parameters and schedules; maintains appropriate activity logs. Performs preventive maintenance and repair work on HVAC equipment, air filters, humidifiers, heating and cooling coils, control valves, air dampers, hot water circulating pumps and air plenums.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, and repairs on steam and hot water distribution system components including but not limited to piping, insulation, valves, expansion joints, seals, pressure reducing stations, pneumatic and electric motorized control components, steam and hot water appliances, chemical feed piping and pumps, radiators, coils, tube bundles and heat exchangers, sterilizers, steam traps, gauges, flow meters, strainers, receivers condensate systems.
  • Operates and maintains steam, open and closed water loop systems such as steam/hot water heating, and chilled and condenser water systems, including monitoring, adjusting and logging of control parameters plus the preventive maintenance and repair to distribution piping, pumps, valves, motorized and pneumatic control valves, chemical feed systems, heat exchangers, chillers and cooling towers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on steam/hot water appliances such as but not limited to glass washers, cage washers, stills, cart washers, pasteurizers and bed pan washers by analyzing faults in equipment controls and components and making repairs and/or modifications as required.
  • Operates and performs preventive maintenance on instrument and medical air compressors/driers, receivers, medical vacuum pumps and their respective pipe distribution systems.
  • Operates and performs preventive maintenance on all auxiliary power diesel generator engine sets and associated fuel oil storage and delivery equipment and provide necessary adjustments or repairs.
  • Identifies nature of malfunction of equipment and appliances such as lifts, beds, wheelchairs, paging systems, and kitchen equipment; performs electrical mechanical repairs by disassembling motors and equipment, cleaning, oiling, greasing and replacing parts such as brushes, elements, bearings, filters, and wires; installs items such as timers, switches, receptacles and ballasts.
  • Replaces plumbing fixtures such as sinks and toilets; repairs plumbing fixtures such as water supply lines and waste lines. Frees clogged drains and toilets.
  • Responds to service and emergency calls affecting repairs at all hours, as appropriate, on systems, buildings, grounds and other hospital equipment. Informs originator of resolution when completed or call status should a delay ensue. Communicates requirement for specialized resources to the immediate supervisor or manager. Escalates issues that cannot be resolved in a timely manner in accordance with department procedures.
  • Reads and interprets mechanical engineering drawings and specifications as they relate to the above responsibilities with the view to provide feedback and recommendations to the immediate supervisor on any building or system modifications or enhancements. Performs minor building or systems modifications and enhancements. May liaise with outside contractors performing major work.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment, and tools; evaluates/recommends purchase of same to the Steam and Mechanical Supervisor.
  • Responds to site emergencies and cooperates with other Departments, Fire, Safety and Security.
  • Ensures that their assigned areas and the general working areas are maintained at a high standard of safety and cleanliness by cleaning, repairing and painting. Clears snow and salts sidewalks, walkways and grounds.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Education and Experience

Certificate of competency as a 3rd Class Power Engineer recognized by the Province of B.C. Four years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
