Reports to: Manager, Instrumentation
About the Position: Working as part of the Instrumentation Maintenance team, the Mechatronic/Electronic Maintenance Specialist will assist the department with maintenance activities, engineering and assembling of various automation projects such as handling devices, mixers, washing and cleaning machines, dispensers and controllers for various processes utilized within the laboratory.

The specialist will put in use their education, knowledge and skills with mechanical, electronics and instrumentation systems (sensors, actuators, and controllers) to maintain, research, acquire and assemble those devices and tools, as well as repair and suggest methods to implement within ALS.

The specialist will also adhere to safe laboratory practices and integrate those in day-to-day activities, devices and promote within the team.

Safety
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and sets an example of safe working practices;
  • Support and promote ALS safety initiatives and programs;
  • May conduct routine safety crew talks, inspections and audits as it pertains to lab procedures and projects;
  • Communicate all safety concerns, incidents or potential hazards to the Manager, Supervisor, Safety Committee member or HSE representative.
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Assist with department operation and day to day tasks and workload;
  • Do and assist with research relevant to projects;
  • Propose testing criteria for success of the projects;
  • Propose and outline project timeframes and needed resources and tools;
  • Do and assist with designs (mechanical, electronics and instrumentation);
  • Prepare materials and tools needed for projects;
  • Build laboratory devices using tools available (mostly assembly from 3rd party manufacturers);
  • Assemble components and devices;
  • Implement and coordinate work activities with other departments, contractors and others as needed;
  • Coordinate work with other departments, assist with implementation or lead the implementation of the project;
  • Assist with training and trains workers in duties and policies;
  • Assist with short-term and long-term planning;
  • Assist in completing various forms, reports, correspondence, purchase orders, plans and records;
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Mechanical engineering;
  • Strong background in electronics / electrical automation and process control;
  • Knowledge of sensors, actuators and instrumentation;
  • Excellent command of the English language, strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Good troubleshooting and problem solving skills;
  • Strong time management and organizational skills;
  • Self-starter, must be proactive and possess ability to work independently;
  • Ability to complete tasks regardless of difficulty and means;
  • Excellent computer skills including MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook;
  • Proficient using CAD systems for mechanical, electronics and instruments needs;
  • Excellent prioritization skills with minimal guidance and direction;
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully transition between hands-on and design / desk-bound role;
  • Safety oriented.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in applied science or mechanical engineering (or related field) preferred;
  • Or mechatronic or similar multi-disciplined training or degree;
  • 2 years’ experience in field with similar duties and requirements.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for up to 7.5 hours per shift;
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds;
  • Extensive walking or movement, bending, kneeling, and working with machine
