Position Overview

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor, Supplies & Services, the Materiel Handler is:Responsible for transportation, distribution and/or retrieval of equipment, supplies, urgent pharmaceuticals, in-house mail, and linen.Maintains inventory of medical/surgical supplies in designated patient-care areas. Supplies linen and medical/surgical supplies to nurse-servers where applicable. Maintains linen inventory in the Linen Room in conjunction with the Winnipeg Hospital Laundry. Prepares linen supply carts for delivery to user areas.Assists with the replenishment of medical/surgical supplies and other related equipment. Responsible for filling orders from reservations, stocking shelves, replenishing stock, and performing inventory counts as required.Position requires considerable standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting, stretching, pushing and pulling. Pushing and pulling cartloads/pallets of supplies that may weigh up to 2, 100 lbs. is required. May be required to work in cramped and/or high conditions where carrying items over obstacles and twisting motions are necessary. Will be required to hand hazardous/dangerous goods in accordance with WRHMIS regulations and Workplace Safety & Health standards.

Experience

  • Related experience an asset.
  • Experience in supplies handling, distribution and inventory management preferred.
  • Previous training or experience in inventory control would be considered an asset.
  • Previous materiel management experience in a health care setting and previous experience with medical/surgical supplies preferred.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Completed high school education to Manitoba standards required.
  • Courses in supplies handling, distribution and inventory management preferred.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Tugger certification an asset.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of medical terminology an asset.
  • Proficiency of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook required.
  • Knowledge of SAP application an asset.
  • Ability to drive a tugger.
  • Ability to organize and establish priorities.
  • Ability to respond to a variety of simultaneous demands.
  • Ability to perform both independently and as a team player.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to the hospital, patients/residents and their families.
  • Well organized with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the demonstrated ability to read, write and speak the English language.
  • The ability to assist in developing, monitoring, and maintaining system files.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical ability to tolerate constant standing, walking, bending and lifting.
  • Good physical health to meet the position demands.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment.
