MANAGER, RESEARCH & INNOVATION (Full-time, Permanent)

The Alberta Motor Transport Association is a not-for-profit, advocacy and safety training association functioning as The Voice, The Standard and The Resource for commercial transportation in Alberta. For more than 80 years, our work has encompassed a broad range of environmental, social, economic, safety and compliance matters that impact provincial highways. Research and innovation is now at the forefront of our projects, enabling the AMTA to bring key stakeholders together to lead research and develop new technologies that will significantly enhance the industry while reducing human and environmental impacts.

JOB SUMMARY

As a critical sub-department within Industry Advancement, you will present strategic goals that drive broad change for each under your responsibility. You will work closely with internal staff other leaders and ensure efficiency, support, coach and guide internal and external stakeholders’ relationships. This role requires a leader with a strong understanding of the commercial transportation industry and the ability to oversee long-range business strategy development and short-range strategy execution. This position requires an individual comfortable with client interactions at all levels and be capable of developing strong and lasting relationships in each AMTA department.

Your ability to represent the organization’s vision, innovation and strategy with business and government leaders as well as front-line staff will be paramount to your success. The Manager directly oversees, and coordinates activities undertaken by the association for the purpose of connecting stakeholders to projects which fulfill the strategic objectives of AMTA.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Proactively identify project opportunities within the scope and mandate of the program and the organization’s strategic objectives
  • Assist the Senior Manager in the development of operational planning which aligns with the association’s overall strategic plan
  • Oversee department operations, coaching, and mentoring department staff, encouraging strategic-thinking skills, collaborative teamwork, and effective working relationships
  • Provide functional daily leadership to direct reports
  • Set team goals to promote individual growth and development as well as achievement of organizational strategic objectives
  • Develop performance metrics related to team goals and achievement of objectives
  • Foster a culture of customer service, teamwork, and staff engagement
  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager on matters relating to recruitment, hiring, ongoing evaluation, and performance management of staff
  • Strategize, develop, and implement the program’s core functions
  • Analyze member insights, industry trends, market analysis, and marketing best practices to build successful strategies
  • Stay apprised of government activities and priorities, and create positions and briefing notes relevant to your role
  • Ensure programs and services are coordinated, managed, and evaluated to ensure the effective utilization of resources including financial, staffing and time
  • Develop and manage the program’s budget
  • Work with external consultants as needed to enhance team bandwidth and perspectives
  • Report to Executive Team on strategic or critical/emerging topics
  • Establish and maintain key provincial and regional relationships
  • Be adept with industry legislation and regulations under the federal, provincial, and industry standards within the transportation field
  • Ensure that all reporting requirements of external funders are met
  • Provide support and direction to committees, sub-committees, and project teams
  • Continuously monitor and periodically report on results
  • Establish clear standards of performance relating to the scope of duties for all direct reports, ensuring that standards are consistently and effectively communicated, monitored, and performance managed accordingly
  • Identify new or emerging risks relating to business operations, raising awareness with the Executive Team, and initiating timely action to remedy risk
  • Develop, implement, and refine operational standards and best practices across areas of responsibility
  • Represent the AMTA and industry to governments, industry affiliated associations, organizations within the AMTA partnerships and the public in matters within scope
  • Develop and deliver presentations, papers, and articles for internal and external audiences as required
  • Other related duties

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Education: Degree in Business Administration, Organizational Analysis or relevant discipline is preferred with a minimum of 10 years working in the transportation regulatory field; equivalency of education and experience will be considered.

Experience: Industry advocacy, commercial vehicle safety, research trends, project management, department management.

The Manager, Research & Innovation requires strong knowledge with regards to:

  • The operation of commercial vehicles, commercial vehicle safety and commercial vehicle maintenance
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial acts, regulations, permits and licensing that govern the commercial transportation industry
  • National and international industry awareness of industry trends, opportunities, and concerns
  • Government Relations
