The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba invites applications for the role of Manager, General Services. Reporting to the Director, Operations & Maintenance (O&M), the Manager is accountable for ensuring UM is an attractive, responsive and safe environment where the students, faculty, staff and community are pleased to work, study and visit.

The Manger leads the General Services Team, which provides a diverse range service for the University, including ground maintenance and landscaping, planning and operation of waste and recycling streams, mail service, deliveries, office moving, operation of storage facilities, accessible transportation, and planning and operation of UM fleet services.

The Manager, General Services is responsible for planning and managing budgets, staff and resources in a responsive and efficient manner. The Manager collaborates with administrators, faculty, students, external organizations, to plan relevant projects and strategies.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • Additional training or certifications in areas such as project management or strategic planning would be considered beneficial.
  • Training in horticulture, arboriculture, fleet, and grounds maintenance would be an asset.
  • Possess a Class 5 driver’s license.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of direct experience in a relevant business role.
  • Must have management training and demonstrated successful human resources management experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of grounds maintenance procedures, landscaping, horticultural and arboriculture practices, good knowledge of related vehicles and equipment is required.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, particularly using spreadsheets, word processing and database software required.
  • Demonstrated strong mentoring and leadership skills are essential.
  • Must be able to problem solve.
  • Must have strong leadership skills.
  • Must have strong training skills.
  • Willingness to learn and take upgrading courses.
  • Demonstrate abilities in operational planning, preparing estimates, preparing reports, organizing, directing, and coordinating a large staff and budget required.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to apply knowledge and expertise for discussions.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to understand and review plans and specifications is required.
  • Ability to write vehicle and equipment specifications required.
  • Must have the ability to make independent decisions along with excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
