The Plant and Animal Health Branch supports the sustainability of plant and animal agriculture, while serving to protect the well-being of the people of the province of British Columbia through surveillance, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and the development of strategies to address identified risks. The Plant and Animal Health Branch consists of three key program areas: The Plant Health Unit, Animal Health Centre, and the Regulatory Unit.

The Plant Diagnostic Pathologist is part of the Plant Health Unit which is responsible for protecting B.C.’s agricultural resource from the adverse impacts of plant pests and diseases (commonly referred to as pests) through the delivery of plant health diagnostic services. The main purpose of this position is to provide diagnoses and pest management options that promote sustainable agri-food systems and mitigate the impact of plant pests. The position also provides surveillance and disease trends monitoring information on new, potential, and established plant pests. This position works closely with the Pathologists, Entomologists, Crop Industry Specialists as well as others in relevant ministry branches to facilitate their use of the Plant Health Laboratory and contribute to new work and projects by providing diagnostic expertise.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of Master’s degree in plant pathology from a recognized university
  • Registered as a Professional Agrologist with the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists or another Canadian Institute
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in industry, university or government as a plant pathologist, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in diagnosing plant diseases
  • Experience working cooperatively with teams
  • Experience in the development of laboratory QA/QC methods, strategies, and sampling protocols
  • Experience in leading the development of technical communications and educational materials on lab methods, standards, and reports
  • Experience providing technical advice to staff concerning methods and their applications

Provisos/Willingness Statements:

  • Valid BC drivers license or equivalent
  • Overnight travel may be required to attend industry and/or association meetings
