Position: Lead Power Systems Electrician

Division: Electrical Construction & Commissioning, Electricity Division

Location: Nisku, AB

Responsible to execute, and lead, all aspects of substation electrical construction work, to a high degree of quality, to meet the requirements of code and construction / engineering work packages.

What You Get to Do:

  • Cable tray installation
  • Cable pull
  • HV/LV cable prep and terminate
  • Install and modify auxiliary equipment
  • Assess and troubleshoot electrical circuits and develop a method of installation, and blocking, to prevent outages
  • Responsible to coordinate the electrical material required for their assigned project
  • Responsible to plan, prioritize, and safely execute their delegated work and the work of their crew, to meet milestones, in adherence with ISD
  • Plan, coordinate, and lead the execution of complex and multi-staged brownfield protection upgrades
  • Competent on the power system and responsible to perform EOS directed switching, and schedule/hold permits
  • Provide input to the project outage plan
  • Frequently lead electrical contractors on site to ensure all work is performed within company standards and safety procedures, including training and instruction
  • Responsible to understand and support enforcement of contractual obligations while working with contractors
  • Coordinate the project’s electrical activities with other ATCO groups, as required
  • Participate in electrical design reviews.
  • Review electrical design for constructability and provide solution-based feedback to Engineering, Execution Planning, and Commissioning
  • Provide feedback to improve ability assessments, standards, practices, and procedures
  • Correct all related drawings and electrical schematics after work is performed
  • Assist with Steel erection and in the replacement/assembly of substation apparatus including: transformers/regulators, circuit breakers
  • Switch assembly and alignment
  • Assist Commissioning and/or Technical Services teams as required

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma.
  • Certificate of proficiency as a Journeyman Power Systems Electrician is required.
  • A valid driver’s license required by the Province of Alberta to operate a vehicle.
  • At least 5 years of related experience and a working knowledge of construction practices and procedures in transmission substations and/or related industrial environments
  • While not required, a Certificate of proficiency as a Journeyman Electrician would be an asset
  • Outstanding safe work habits
  • Experience in planning, directing and coordinating the work of others, is preferred.
  • Highly skilled in ability to troubleshoot electrical circuits
  • Must be proficient in the use of all trade related hand/power tools
  • Must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to coordinate several complex activities at once
  • Must be able to understand & interpret engineering, complex logic/electrical schematics, architectural and other construction drawings
  • Demonstrated professionalism and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish excellent working relationships
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to document and organize project communications
  • Superior analytical, problem solving, audit and investigation skills
  • Expert knowledge of relevant legislation – Safety Codes (AEUC), OHS, Environmental, and all applicable Canadian Electrical codes
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team environment
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
