Laboratory Analyst (T) - Specialty Assay

Location: ALS Minerals, North Vancouver

Reports to: Supervisor or Manager, Specialty Assay

General Accountability:
Independently conduct routine and non-routine analyses of geological samples using correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality, and adhere to safe laboratory practices by working in accordance with the ALS Health and Safety Program.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Clean and maintain orders of lab wares and ensure they are returned to the proper location;
  • Report any quality issue (e.g., coarse sample, mix-up) to supervisors and/or lead hands and assist in resolving the problem;
  • Perform fluoride & chloride fusions, transferring and analytical tasks;
  • Perform inventory count and advise supervisor or shift leaders of low levels of supplies, standards or chemicals required for continued operation;
  • Run specific gravity, moisture and density analysis;
  • Handling routine digestion procedures;
  • Running pH and conductivity independently;
  • Training new staff in A2, A3 & A4 positions when required;
  • Organize and maintain inventory of calibration standards, production and maintenance logs, equipment records and supplies;
  • Perform routine wet assay analytical work, including but not limited to gravimetric sulphate analyses, LECO leaches and other selective leaches;
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on LECO C/S analyzer, CO2 coulometer, Specific Ion Analyzer, Rapid Moisture Analyzer and AA instruments;
  • Prepare sample dilutions;
  • Prepare and organize calibration standards for routine instrumentation analyses;
  • Test and evaluate calibration standards;
  • Operate instrument software and the GEMS program;
  • Use Microsoft Excel and Word to create written reports;
  • Ensure all prepared and available samples are accounted for in the lab;
  • Prioritize workloads according to daily stats and turnaround commitments;
  • Report to supervisor in a timely manner when non-routine maintenance is required;
  • Advise supervisor/ manager of job hazards;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong analytical and mechanical skills;
  • Organized and highly motivated individual;
  • Excellent hand eye coordination;
  • Detail oriented individual with a strong commitment to quality;
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team;
  • Ability to effectively handle a high volume of work and time critical issues;
  • Intermediate English communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  • Intermediate computer skills including MS Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • Familiarity with any of the following would be an asset:
o. Calibration of routine instruments
p. Evaluation of QC Checks and calibration standards
q. Analyses of all partial and total digestions
r. Chemical and physical interferences in geological analyses
s. Detection limits
t. Precision
u. Calibration

Required Qualifications:
  • Recognized Diploma or Degree in Science required, with a concentration in Chemistry preferred, or completion of the BC Assayers certification program required;
  • Minimum of 1 year laboratory experience in analytical chemistry, instrumentation or related field required.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to lift up to 20lbs;
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for up to 7.5 hours per day;
  • Manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks.
