Youth Mentor – Teen Night

The Northern Alberta YMCA is looking for a Youth Mentor to provide quality mentorship for local youth through positive interaction and promotion of YMCA values to create a safe and welcoming presence during youth programming within our Health Fitness and Aquatic centers.

Position Responsibilities

• Utilizing effective communication skills and maintaining consistent communication with other staff, and facility users in building a safe environment within Health, Fitness and Aquatics Centers.
• Encourage safety practices and responsible use of the facility and equipment.
• Demonstrating YMCA values and creating positive interactions with youth and families, focusing on building meaningful relationships.
• Engaging youth in recreation and social capacities and facilitating skill development for youth who are interested in learning new skills.
• Working as a flexible team member and assisting in various tasks as needed.
• Reporting any critical incidents to the Duty Manager and/or local law enforcement as needed.
• Ensure YMCA equipment is being inspected by staff, removing any unsafe equipment, and reporting any damage to the coordinator.
• Staff will be expected to work indoors (gymnasium, fitness center or pool) or outdoors (sports fields) for most of their shift.

What You’ll Need for This Job

• Minimum 18+ years of age
• High School Education or equivalent is an asset
• Complete additional training within 3 months of hire
• Certifications: Standard First Aid & CPR-C
• Able to obtain a Police Information Check and Vulnerable sector check
• Skateboarding skills and experience coaching skill development to novice skaters
• Basic understanding of positive youth culture
• Conflict Management Skills
• Experience facilitating youth recreation and social programs
