Overview

Avison Young (AY) is seeking a highly talented individual to deliver ‘real-world’ implementable solutions through workplace intelligence (strategy) consulting services. As a workplace Interior Designer, you will help to deliver multiple projects at once, engage with the internal Workplace Consulting team as well as client and external consultants and suppliers as required, to ensure timely, successful implementation of design initiatives.

The Interior Designer role is a mid-level position to assists in providing options for design concepts and planning services to achieve client needs, considering factors such as cost, budget, and environment limitations. This includes research to select furnishings and finishes, planning, CAD drawings, preparing presentation materials, and site visits to verify field conditions.

You will be entrusted to enhance, grow and be an integral part of the existing Canadian Workplace Consulting service line focused on developing and creating the optimal work environments for our clients. You will work hand-in-hand with our in-house workplace strategists, assist in developing tailored strategies and create design solutions derived from our client’s workplace strategy.

You will be part of an ambitious team that is changing the way operations and real estate decisions are made. This role is directly part of the Canadian team but you shall also be available to be a resource to the US team as required/as needed. You will have a high-level of autonomy to work when and where you prefer, assuming you deliver per your engagement agreements with clients. This role is ideally located within the GTA, Ontario as a priority but other locations will be considered as well.

Responsibilities
  • Provide and supports interior design activities including needs analysis and developing the space program, test-fitting, stacking and blocking plans, finishes and furnishings selection, design options, sample boards, specification writing, working drawings, renderings, deficiency identification.
  • Assists in Workplace Strategy activities in a supporting role
  • Supports development of material cost estimates, project specification and tender documents.
  • Assists in development of design concepts that meet client needs and with consideration to work process, culture, project implementation plans, serviceability, sustaining cost, environmental considerations (LEED), impact to related building systems and other project specific conditions.
  • Renders design ideas in the form of 3-D renderings, work drawings, plans, models and schemes.
  • As applicable to the assignment, with supervision, delivers projects of appropriate complexity, including site visits to verify field conditions and deficiencies.
  • Research new products and materials and value engineered options.
  • Present materials and drawings to demonstrate new concepts thought starters and design intent.
  • Maintain Standards Binder for client.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors’ Degree in Interior Design
  • 5+ years of job-related experience with demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects, numerous deadlines, and conflicting priorities.
  • Design experience specifically in the “Workplace” field.
  • Awareness of building issues, building and safety codes, the range of relevant products and materials, ergonomics, and applicable industry standards and regulations.
  • Ability to develop creative but functional interior design solutions to solve Client issues.
  • Awareness of cost estimating and project specification writing.
  • Computer skills: proficient with use of Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop
  • Proficient with AutoCAD, Revit, 3D Rendering and related software;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Strong organizational, time management and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Ability to run with a task independently with support and guidance from more senior team members.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Effective client service skills with ability to manage client expectations or redirect to supervisor as needed.
  • Intern member with Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) or equivalent certification across Canada in other provincial jurisdictions.
  • LEED and WELL certification is an asset.
