The Role:
At Rakuten Kobo we work globally across cultures and time zones to bring the best reading experience to our customers and growth to our partnerships. As VP of Technology at Rakuten Kobo, you’ll shape the architecture and blueprints for all our products and services to help the development teams deliver features at a higher velocity with greater reliability and quality.

In the role of VP, Technology, you’ll be designing the technology architecture strategy for:
Building our third-generation ecommerce, ad-tech, marketing automation, and personalization platform that powers dozens of storefronts in hundreds of markets.

Growing our App, PWA, and Embedded client technologies into full-stack platforms that can serve millions of users in a reliable way.

Facilitating design sessions for building the fundamental building block capabilities for our upcoming products and services.

Expanding our rich data model surrounding our content catalog to allow for better product search and discovery and syndication with our retail partners.

Designing integrations and optimizations between systems to decrease overhead and increase development velocity across teams.

Researching and onboarding modern technologies and techniques for DevOps, Data Scale, and system integrations.

As a member of the Kobo R&D management team, we’ll look to you to bring your diverse experience to guide our multi-year investments to magnify the outputs of our teams by the application of the right technologies and designs in our product development process.

The Skillset:
To be successful in this role, you should have comparable experience or aptitude with the following:
Several successful years serving as a senior leader in software development organizations (Architect, Principal/Director Level)

Multiple years of experience working on platforms in the ecommerce or ad-tech space that have significant scale in both real-time and asynchronous workflows.

Deep knowledge of the technologies and design patterns surrounding: Diverse data storage patterns (Document DB, SQL, S3 etc.), Web and API services (Dotnet, Java, Node.js etc.), Asynchronous integrations and event-oriented systems (Kafka, Rabbit MQ), Kubernetes, Docker, and Function hosting infrastructures, Continuous Delivery and Continuous Testing Techniques

Experience in hybrid cloud strategy with good knowledge of GCP, Azure, Akamai, and other internet and cloud platforms.

Exposure to security engineering, threat modelling and mitigation, and intrusion detection.

Experience designing and building resilient and robust distributed systems capable of demonstratable real-time resilience and full disaster recovery.

Knowledge of how to learn how our systems live and breathe through observability including metrics, log aggregation, rum, and distributed tracing technologies.

Experience in delivering training, evangelizing technologies, and communicating best practices to diverse groups of development teams. You’ll need to be able to work at the POC and code review level as much as at the architecture diagram level.

A pragmatic approach to ensuring that tactical needs are met without losing sight of the long-term objectives of improved velocity, reliability, efficiency, and scale. You should be a big advocate of agile & incremental architecture to reduce complexity and facilitate frictionless evolution and expansion.
