Job Summary/Basic Function
Contribute to our City by joining the Infrastructure Division as a Traffic Technician. As part of the Integrated Transportation team, your key responsibilities include data collection, roadway asset management, traffic operations and control reviews, safety assessments, conceptual design of multi-modal facilities and development approval support.

A Traffic Technician provides preliminary planning, design and management solutions for all City transportation network, traffic safety and roadway development activities. This position is anticipated to focus on transportation capital project development.


Duties
Evaluates transportation data (safety, volume, other), site conditions and other factors to assess transportation conditions. Recommends corrective action(s) to advance policies and improve performance. Coordinates installation activities.
  • Participates in transportation project development, management and implementation, such as roadway geometry, signage and marking changes, traffic calming, active transportation, traffic management plans, etc.
  • Responds to inquiries from the public, other City departments, consultants and external organizations regarding traffic operations/safety and transportation issues (e.g. road improvements, parking, traffic control devices, active transportation, Bylaws, etc.). Coordinates other agencies (MoTI and BC Transit) as required.
  • Responds to unsafe traffic issues, potential hazards and neighbourhood traffic complaints, ensuring effective and timely communication with the public and affected agencies (ICBC, MoTI, SD23, RCMP).
  • Reviews development applications and proposes solutions to address deficiencies.
  • Prepares a variety of technical drawings, concept plans and reports including road right-of-way, road alignment, land acquisitions, etc. Applies an in-depth knowledge of traffic engineering and roadway design best practices, utilizing AutoCAD, Synchro, Sidra and other design and modeling software.
  • Supports capital project planning and budgeting.
