Traffic Engineer (Professional Engineer II) Job Number : 41661

The Traffic Operations Section operates Edmonton’s diverse network of roads including freeways, expressways, arterial, collector and local roads as well as shared pathways and on-street bicycle facilities. This position provides an exciting opportunity to operationalize the City Plan that sets the strategic direction for the way Edmonton grows, it’s mobility systems, open spaces and places. The Traffic Engineer is responsible for evaluating and analysing traffic operational issues for all modes of travel, including active transportation, based on national and local guidelines and best practice and will make recommendations based on the analysis using professional judgement. Using accepted engineering principles, practices, and design standards, key functions of this position will be to:

  • Review traffic operational issues related to signage, pavement markings and general operations, conduct site inspections and field observations responding to public and Council inquiries
  • Prepare and maintain technical and legal documents such as bylaws, guidelines and procedures and stamp and sign engineering signage and pavement marking plans
  • Review and determine roadway posted speed limits based on engineering judgement in accordance with national and local guidelines
  • Complete at-grade railway crossing reviews in coordination with rail companies and Transport Canada
  • Complete engineering plan reviews for internal and external circulation from a traffic operations perspective based on engineering judgement
  • Coordinate and establish restriction procedures and guidelines for road closures associated with road construction and special events based upon Edmonton’s Manual of Temporary Traffic Control
  • Project manage and support the Traffic Operations capital program, including the City’s overhead sign program
  • Support other City plans and projects from a traffic operations perspective for all modes of travel
  • Manage projects and consultants related to traffic operations
  • Prepare and administer the terms and conditions of contractual agreements for external engineering services
  • Other technical related duties
Qualifications :
  • Completion of Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Membership in APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
  • 4 years engineering experience in traffic operations, traffic safety, transportation engineering and/or transportation planning
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
  • Courses in the areas of traffic operations, traffic safety, transportation engineering, and/or transportation planning would be an asset
  • Knowledgeable about applicable Transportation Association of Canada guidelines, Alberta Transportation guidelines and city standards and guidelines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze complex technical information and make timely decisions
  • Possess skills to work in multidisciplinary environment
  • Project management skills
  • General competence in Google Suite and SAP
  • Customer service skills
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
