Position description
Reporting directly to the Director, Accessibility and Student Wellness, the Student Support Coordinator assumes primary responsibility for coordinating the implementation of tutoring, note-taking, and test accommodations for students registered with the Meighen Centre. The Coordinator is also responsible for recruitment and supervision of note-takers and test invigilators, as well as tracking and reporting on these programs. This position may require irregular hours of work.
Position Responsibilities
- Coordinate all aspects of the Peer Tutor and Note Taking programs
- Assist students, in collaboration with the Post-Grad Intern, in utilizing tutor software and in finding tutors
- Address questions or concerns expressed by tutors or tutees
- Provide detailed individual and group training for peer tutors and ongoing job development skills, including on utilizing and navigating the Nimbus platform
- Serve as lead contact and support person for tutors and students registered with the Meighen Centre
- Recruit and train note takers and tutors
- Match note takers to students needing a note taker
- Maintain comprehensive note taker records
- Provide feedback to note takers when necessary
- Arrange for payment of note takers
- Keep close track of peer tutor and note taker budgets so as not to overspend
- Prepare receipts for various provincial governments, parents, and other external funders that provide supplemental funding for note takers and tutors
- Liaise with Disability Services Advisors to implement proper test accommodations for Meighen Centre students
- Coordinate test accommodations in the Meighen Centre, which includes organizing, scheduling and setting up tests/exams to be written in the Meighen Centre, serving as the primary contact for faculty, staff and students for questions related to set up for tests/exams written in the Meighen Centre, readying assistive technologies as required
- Lead invigilation and hire/train/supervise/arrange for payment of student invigilators as needed
- Maintain appropriate case notes in student files
- Play an active role in the collaborative/integrated model of care for students with disabilities
- Using Nimbus and other means, maintain records of tutoring and provide statistics on services utilized by students over the course of the academic year at the end of each semester
- Undertake professional development in the field of disabilities as the budget permits
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications/skills
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (preferably a B.Ed. or a B.S.W.)
- Previous experience working at a post-secondary institution in the area of disability services preferred
- Knowledge and understanding of learning disabilities, mental illnesses, and other chronic conditions/disabilities and how a diagnosis can impact a student and appropriate interventions
- Experience with assistive technology (e.g. reading software, speech-to-text, etc.)
- Skills and experience in using administrative technologies (e.g. MS Office, OneDrive, Nimbus, etc.)
- Highly developed skill and experience with interviewing
- Ability to assume a high degree of initiative and innovation
- Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality with student information
- Ability to respond effectively in crisis situations with tact and diplomacy
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to work irregular hours
