Autism Nova Scotia is a national leader in providing social, educational, and employment supports for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), their families, caregivers, and professionals. Autism Nova Scotia delivers programming in Halifax and in nine communities across Nova Scotia through our Regional Autism Centre’s. Our three program divisions are: Social & Community Inclusion; Employment Support; and Family and Caregiver Support.

POSITION TITLE:Social Group Facilitator – Cape Breton Region Chapter

DEPARTMENT: Chapters

LOCATION: Regional Autism Centre -282 George St., Sydney, NS

POSITION: Casual (evening/weekends/call-ins); Up to 5 hours/week

DIRECT REPORT: CB Office Manager /Chapter Support Manager

Program Summary:Under the supervision of Autism Support Coordinator & Office Manager, Social Group Facilitators will work directly with autistic individuals. The Social Group Facilitator shall act as a guardian and support person for the individual(s) assigned to his/her care during program hours. The program facilitator is responsible to ensure a safe, fun, active and engaged experience for participants.

They are also responsible for ensuring all participants are treated with dignity and respect, making sure health and safety needs are always met and are accountable for a participant’s whereabouts. Maintaining good communication with staff, parents, and participants regarding program activities. Facilitators work as a team player, ensuring all program spaces at the Centre are kept clean, tidy, and in an organized manner.

Responsibilities include:

  • We are looking for a passionate team player who takes personal accountability to deliver on what is expected in their role and who strives for excellence every day.
  • Ensure a quality program that will help autistic individuals practice social skills, life skills, gain and maintain new friendships, and enjoy recreational activities, all while helping each participant live their lives to the fullest.
  • Lead a weekly 2-hour evening program (offered on two separate evenings to two separate age groups.)
  • Tuesdays will host ages 6-13 years.
  • Wednesdays will host 14-18 years.
  • Social programs will take place on site at our local Centre as well as occasional outings within our community.

Qualifications:

  • Post- Secondary Degree/ Diploma in a related field or equivalent job experience
  • A clear, current criminal record check and child abuse registry search is required
  • First Aid & CPR certification (is considered an asset)
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (is considered an asset or willingness to acquire)
  • A valid driver’s license and access to an insured vehicle is an asset

Minimum Knowledge and Experience:

  • Good knowledge of Autism and the diversity of needs throughout the lifespan of all genders
  • Good interpersonal skills are required, strong knowledge and connections to the disability or autism communities an asset; a warm and outgoing personality is a must.

Minimum Skills and Ability:

  • Organizational, Administrative and Time Management Skills – Must have the ability to plan, organize and coordinate activities; to address constant and varied demands of the position
  • Group Facilitation Skills - Must have the ability to interact with those who have different support needs
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills - The position requires the ability to be open, think broadly, have a drive to transform lives, help build understand, acceptance and inclusion for people living with autism, and desire to create a society that works for autistic people.
