Working under the broad supervision of the Site Reliability Engineering - Lead, the Site Reliability Engineering - Level 1 has responsibility for the execution and implementation of the SRE program strategic direction. The SRE leverages leading-edge technologies, and innovative approaches to position Empire Life for measurable success; improving application reliability and ensuring SLA requirements are continually met.

What you’ll be working on

  • Responsible for reliability, monitoring, operations, capacity and performance-analysis
  • Responsible for improving service observability/monitoring to improve MTTD/MTTR (mean time to detection/recovery)
  • Create and maintain monitoring, alerting and dashboarding solutions that improve the visibility into our applications’ performance and metrics and keep operational workload in-check
  • Use automation technologies to ensure repeatability, eliminate toil, reduce time to action and repair services.
  • Participate in setting application SLAs/SLOs/SLIs with product owners, project managers, development and support managers across IT and Business units
  • Proactively testing the flexibility and resilience of the system(s) using load and chaos testing
  • Work with development, security and audit teams to ensure adherence to compliance standards (e.g. Pipeda)
  • Troubleshoot complex reliability and performance issues, collaborate with support and development teams, document RCAs and ensure compliance with incident and problem management timelines
  • Be available as “On-Call” in the event of critical incidents
  • Documenting "Tribal/Collective" Knowledge

What you’ll need to have

  • 3+ years of development experience in Java, C#, React-JS and/or Python
  • Experience working as production support for critical applications that require 24x7 availability
  • Strong skills in development methodologies including, reading and understanding code
  • Experience troubleshooting n-tier architectures with diverse sets of technologies (e.g. load balancers, web/app/caching/database servers, queues, threading, memory, CPU, heap, storage, network, os)
  • Experience using application and infrastructure monitoring systems (e.g. Splunk, Cloudwatch, Datadog, New Relic, Sumologic, ELK, Nagios, Cloud Monitoring)
  • Experience with Cloud infrastructures (e.g. GCP, Azure, AWS)
  • Knowledge with continuous deployment based software development lifecycles (e.g. CI/CD)
  • Knowledge of SQL databases (e.g., MSSQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, DB2, Sybase)
  • Knowledge of ITIL service delivery and support
  • Experience with handling production incidents
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
