Uniform guard will be used to help prevent losses and provide a safe environment for customers and employees
  • They are expected to protect and support employees if a threatening situation should arise
  • Uniform Guards prevent shoplifting, disruptive behavior and destruction of property
  • All Loss Prevention incidents must be documented by completing the incident report form and sent to their supervisor
  • All changes to hours and requests for coverage must come either from Loss Prevention or Support
  • Any schedule changes or requests not coming from Loss Prevention or Support should not be done
  • Arrive on site in uniform 5 to 10 minutes prior to start of every shift
  • Check in with the store manager on duty at the beginning of each shift, making sure to receive information on potential issues that have already occurred in the store before their arrival and instructions on how best to be utilized for the shift
  • Follow their employers directives on dress code and workplace behavior, while acting in the best interest of Dollarama
  • Maintain a polite and friendly demeanor, treating every person with courtesy and respect
  • Remain alert at all times
  • Pay attention to high theft, especially aisles containing candy, batteries, gum, electronics and health and beauty products
  • Keep an eye on the checkout area, even while patrolling the rest of the store
  • Make sure that there are no customers trespassing in the associate only areas of the store
  • Be proactive about offering help to any customer who appears confused or in need of assistance
  • Be on the lookout for instances of threatening, fraudulent or rude behavior by customers towards store employees
  • A store may have a problem with large groups of customers entering the store at the same time. The guard may have to limit the number of customers coming into the store
  • The guard is not allowed to discriminate against individuals from coming into the store, but only ask to wait to enter the store
PREVENT SHOPLIFTING
  • Guard the store entrance and exit, preventing “grab and runs” using verbal commands and identifying potential shoplifters
  • All customers entering the store must be greeted and, if needed, provided with customer assistance
  • When a potential shoplifter has been identified, uniform security will:
  • Make their presence known by patrolling the aisle
  • Ask the customer if he/she needs assistance
  • If a customer takes an item to conceal it on his/her person, the guard can let the customer know that they have been observed doing this by reminding the customer that they have to pay for the item
  • If the suspect customer passes the cash area, the guard should ask the customer politely if they forgot to pay
  • If these measures prove unsuccessful or if the customer becomes aggressive, the guard should let the customer leave immediately and contact the police. The guard should take note of the suspects distinguishing features to assist with the police report. The store may also have cameras, times and descriptions are important for video retrieval. If the suspect enters a vehicle the make, model and license plate should be noted.
PREVENT DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR AND DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY
  • The guard should be on constant patrol of the store making their presence known
  • Be on the lookout for instances of threatening, fraudulent or rude behavior by customers towards store employees. In such a case, the guard should use verbal de-escalation to protect and support the employee and ask the customer to leave the store. If there is an escalation, the guard should notify the police immediately
  • PLEASE NOTE: A uniform guard should not attempt to detain or arrest an offender.
