Your Opportunity

An immediate opening exists in the Burnaby Office of our Western Canada Transportation Group for a Junior Railway Designer.

Our projects involve railway capacity expansions, network growth, control center upgrades and expansions, maintenance studies and transit system design & integration. Services range from conceptual and preliminary design planning studies, to detailed design & preparation of procurement packages, through to engineering support during construction.

Your Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Take a proactive hands-on role in track design projects.
  • Development and production of horizontal and vertical track alignment designs, cross sections, special trackwork detailing, setting out and railway embankment grading and drainage drawings
  • Development of ballasted and non-ballasted track forms
  • Development and production of regulatory drawings for at-grade road/rail crossings
  • Assessment of rail vehicle/infrastructure clearances
  • Liaison with other railway engineers to ensure all work is completed to a high standard and with a consistent approach.
  • Calculation of quantities and preparation of cost estimates
  • Preparation of project specifications for materials and construction
  • Working with Project Managers on developing design schedule and budgets.
  • Highly motivated to work as a team player and have successful interaction with clients.
  • Comply with Stantec Quality Management, Safety, and Environmental policies.
  • Complete fieldwork, as required, involving design development, as well as, completing periodic and as built conditions during construction

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Preferably 1-2 years of experience in railway engineering.
  • Have a strong interest towards railway engineering projects.
  • Have a good technical understanding of track design for standard trackwork, special trackwork, ballasted and non-ballasted track and associated grading and drainage.
  • Experience with grading, drainage, and track alignment design for mainlines, sidings, industrial yards and spur tracks, intermodal and transload facilities, subway, commuter and light rail transit.
  • Ability to complete conceptual plans, preliminary & detailed designs and cost estimating.
  • Track construction supervision experience is an asset.
  • Preferred Software experience – Civil 3D, AutoCAD, MicroStation, In Roads, In Rail, Bentley Rail Track, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with AREMA, Class 1 Railroad and Light Rail Transit design and construction requirements.

Education and Experience

  • This role requires 0-2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Degree/Diploma in Civil Engineering Design program from an accredited University/College or equivalent

Typical office environment working with computers and field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. We will ask as part of your development, to work in the field – safety training and equipment will be provided.
